  • End of AIDS in America should be much closer

The Centers for Disease Control Director Tom Frieden sums it up nicely: Key to controlling the nation’s HIV epidemic is helping people with HIV get connected to ... care and treatment, to suppress the virus, live longer and help protect others.” Unfortunately, 70 percent of Americans who have HIV have yet to unlock what seems to be a simple prescription for better health. And that’s important because unlike diabetes and obesity, which when left untreated harm the patient, HIV is communicable. A new CDC study says that of the... Full story

  • McManigal: Beliefs are far more than opinions

I often hear people characterize political differences as mere differences of opinion. If only they were that trivial. A disagreement over the best music would normally be a frivolous difference of opinion, but what would happen if it were politicized? You might criminalize my favorite songs if 51 percent of the voters agree with you or if a bureaucrat makes up a rule, then demands I only listen to your favorite music whether I like it or not, on 8-track tape — and throw me i... Full story

There seems to be a movement across the county to not only allow students in elementary schools to opt out of testing, but to encourage them to do so. The primary drivers of this nationwide crusade are educators and parents who believe that having children take fewer tests will decrease stress on the kids. Rube Render According to a recent article in the Clovis News Journal, New Mexico has an organization called NM-Refuse the Test that provides a web site where parents can...

  • Brandon: If choices are chance or truth, I choose truth

    Judy Brandon

What is the difference in chance and something that was designed beforehand predicted and then came true? The facts are that many prophecies in the Old Testament about Jesus were made hundreds of years before he was even born. The miraculous thing is that those prophesies about Jesus were fulfilled and are recorded in the New Testament. Columnist Prophecy: The Messiah will come. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. A... Full story

  • Don't have to look far for angels

link Patti Dobson Religion columnist I have a new favorite quote: “I’ve seen and met angels wearing the disguise of ordinary people living ordinary lives,” credited to singer Tracy Chapman. I believe in angels, and believe they walk among us. I believe in the wonder of ordinary people doing ordinary (and at times extraordinary) things because their heart tells them to do something. They’re not ruled by the mind, but guided by the heart. You may recognize some of these people....

Regarding Wednesday’s death of former Eastern New Mexico University football coach Jack Scott: Coach Scott’s first college coaching experience was at Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, when I was a junior. He immediately changed the way we had done things. He instilled a spirit and attitude that playing football for him was important. Most of us never knew what it was like to work that hard and do the conditioning at 100 percent for every drill. Coach Scott made the games seem like a reward for the work we did every day at pra...

  • Eventually got that low range savior

Local columnist link Audra Brown It was a couple of weeks before Christmas, or otherwise well into winter that year. The point is, it was cold and had been snowing for days, and it sure hadn’t gotten anywhere near thawed.
