  • My Turn - Milk every outing that isn't work

Why do we have to experience pain before we learn the lesson? Why can't we just hear the saying from our parents and take the hint? Sure sayings have their wit but they're played out when you speak them and then you become an adult and you realize they've never been more factual. The whole, "you don't know what you got 'til it's gone" is probably true every time you move. While I was living in San Francisco and Houston, there was so much to do but I didn't take advantage of all the free diverse activities going on. Being in...

  • Plant closure isn't peanuts to Portales

Two months is a long time to watch millions of pounds of a crop sit in barns, to be out of a job in a tough economy, to have a business shuttered with no clue as to when it can re-open. But that's the position the federal government has put Portales farmers and workers in who depend on the Sunland Inc. peanut processing plant. If that doesn't stick to the roof of your mouth ... Last month, the Food and Drug Administration indefinitely suspended Sunland Inc.'s registration to operate because of what it said were repeated safet...

  • Same-sex spouses still lack benefits

With repeal last year of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell law, many military people, including senior leaders, assumed that married gay and lesbian couples had gained not only job security but also equality in allowances, benefits and access to family support programs. That assumption is wrong. Since the law took effect 14 months ago, the Department of Defense has kept in place policies that bar spouses of same-gender couples from having military identification cards, shopping on base, living in base housing or participating in... Full story

  • Idle time for the shredder

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

I took a few days off last week, and to quote "Office Space" protagonist Peter Gibbons, "I did absolutely nothing, and it was everything I thought it could be." OK, so it was a little bit more, as I discovered that giving me idle time is a terrible idea. With no major renovation project to tackle or ballpark to visit, I was left with idle time. It got used productively, particularly in Christmas shopping, housecleaning, furniture moving, and packing up clothes I didn't need and donating them to people who might. The jury's st... Full story

  • Officials appeased by Los Abuelitos explanations

    Alisa Boswell

Roosevelt County seniors and officials left the county courthouse on good terms Tuesday afternoon after rough beginnings in a public forum. The topic of discussion in the afternoon meeting was the new Los Abuelitos Senior Center building on West Fir Street, which was built using $734,000 in Community Development Block Grant and county money. The completion of the 3,200-square-foot building was formally announced at a meeting Thursday, but La Casa Family Health Center Director Seferino Montano refused to move seniors into the... Full story

  • Wind project concerns raised

Local leaders and landowners agree that wind energy projects will be vital to New Mexico's economy, but a hindrance in getting these projects off the ground is the possible interference with radars at Cannon Air Force Base and area airports. Community members spoke with representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration about the FAA's impact studies and how they affect the approval of local wind energy projects Tuesday at the Local Growth Management Committee meeting at the Clovis-Carver Library. • Lady Rams field young squad

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

After four years, the Portales Lady Rams are about to begin life without standout Macy Mitchell. Sixth-year coach Clay Stout is hoping his squad, which had relied heavily on Mitchell's scoring the past two seasons, can do it by committee as they prepare to open the 2012-13 campaign against Texline, Texas, at 9 a.m. (MST) on Thursday in the 12-team Dimmitt (Texas) Invitational. Mitchell, who led the team to three Class 3A semifinal appearances in the last four years, is now a member of the Eastern New Mexico University volleyb...
