(CNJ staff photo: Andy DeLisle) PORTALES — It’s early in the season, but the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team might want to bottle the formula from Thursday’s Lone Star Conference crossover game against Southwestern Oklahoma. The Zias clicked on all cylinders for much of the game and, with no one playing more than 24 minutes, cruised to a 79...

(CNJ staff photo: Andy DeLisle) PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s Mikal Monette matched Southwestern Oklahoma’s Nate Perry in points and rebounds, but not in turnovers. On a night featuring 27 ENMU giveaways and poor outside shooting, the Bulldogs took advantage to beat the Greyhounds 80-65 Thursday night in a Lone Star Conference men’s crossover game at Greyhoun...

  • CHS GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lady Cats set to invade Portales

    Dave Wagner

The Clovis and Portales girls basketball teams have enjoyed plenty of success over recent seasons. Portales has reached the Class 3A state championship game in each of the last six campaigns, winning four times, while the Lady Wildcats were Class 5A state titlists in 2005 and have won 67 of their last 70 games dating to the end of the 2003-04 season. This year, both are replacing key players but expect to be factors again in their respective classes. The Lady Rams (1-0) host Clovis (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the first of...

  • When it comes to health, there’s no free lunch

Col. Kenneth Hall It’s easy to take for granted that which we enjoy every day. What is firmly in hand one moment can be snatched away the next. And what goes neglected or mistreated will prematurely fail. Health is a perfect example, especially for a young and robust population such as ours. All too often we consider ourselves invulnerable if not indestructible. In short, some of us are self-abusive with poor health habits. Sometimes it’s to overcome stress; sometimes for recreation; other times it’s the result of social pres...

  • Portales — Robertson II

    Kevin Wilson

It was a sunny day in Las Vegas, N.M., with highs nearing the 80s and a clear night, with temperatures in the mid-50s when the Portales Rams and Robertson Cardinals first met to open up the 2006 Class 3A football season. The days now, are cold and windy in Portales, and snowfall lined Greyhound Stadium Wednesday, three days from the Rams and Cardinals closing the season with the Class 3A title on the line at 2 p.m. It’s a different circumstance on Dec. 2, with different weather, different stakes and — as some would argue — d...

  • Ideal body shouldn’t be child’s main focus

Three of our five children play soccer. My husband and I believe any sport they practice will help them develop self-esteem, discipline and focus. But according to my husband, no “sport” includes dance, cheerleading or ice-skating. Not only do I love to watch these three “sports,” I also studied dance for many years. My husband jokingly says that these three activities are not really “sports,” though he admits that they fall within the dictionary definition of the word “sport.” According to Wikipedia.com, “sports” are “a... Full story

  • Quick thinking saves swimmers’ lives at unforgettable picnic

    Don McAlavy

“There was an air of excitement in the group for we had planned a big picnic for several weeks,” said Lucille Matlock. “We departed for a far-off destination, Cottonwood Grove, about 10 miles west of Melrose. We all felt a great adventure was in store for us that day. If we had only known! “Ranchvale school had volunteered their school bus for us to ride in on that beautiful summer morning in July 1935. We were the Ranchvale Extension Club, and our kids went with us. “Cottonwood Grove was an old landmark, and the highway to F...

  • Road trips teach several lessons

    Freedom Newspapers

They say the best part of the journey is the journey itself, not the destination. I’m not sure who “they” are, but I’ll bet they’ve never taken a road trip. My latest jaunt took me some 1,300 miles from the blustery Pacific Northwest to the desert heat of Arizona, mainly to get out of the rain. Of course, on departure day, Oregon’s sun blasted as bright as the North Star with mild temperatures and a gorgeous blue sea. Since the new Tucson digs were paid for, my gold couch already packed and the U-Haul blocking most of the...

  • Holidays evoke many emotions

Along about mid-December, few of us can be blamed, or even held accountable, if we begin to get a bit Scroogified about the season. That might be especially true if one hasn’t done all of one’s shopping, and knows that the other schedule-challenged shoppers will be out there, running around as well. Wait a minute. How about a place where you can do both? By that I mean, in the words of Gallery 15 team member, Teresa, find a haven of “respite and rest during the busyness of the holiday season” while simultaneously finding...

  • Holidays bring about nostalgia

    Bob Huber

Whenever the yuletide season rears its evil head, I’m always reminded of my world-class journalistic enterprises. In fact, I get all teary eyed and go looking for Kleenex tissues with wintry scenes printed on them. Back in olden times I reported for the Denver Post, and my city editor, a weary cynic named Snyder, said through his hangover, “Huber, go find a heart-rending Christmas story.” “What a unique notion, boss,” I said. “How do you come up with these ideas?” “But just remember to include the eight golden items of...

  • Roanhaus leads big turnaround at Robertson

Las Vegas Robertson football coach Chad Roanhaus, a Clovis High grad and son of longtime Wildcats coach Eric Roanhaus, celebrates during last week’s Class 3A semifinal win over Socorro. Courtesy photo: Santa Fe New Mexican When he first accepted the job as Las Vegas Robertson’s football coach, Chad Roanhaus had a goal for the Cardinals, who had never won a high school football championship. “We’re going to get one,” Roanhaus said in 2003. He’s done that, and arguably become the most successful coach in Robertson’s...
