In his first season as Clovis High boys basketball coach, Matt King led the Wildcats to last spring's Class 5A state semifinals. With six of their top eight players back, the Cats will be disappointed if they don't get beyond that this time. "I think the expectations are high, but they're always going to be high," said King, whose team finished 18-10 in 2011-12 and lost to Eldorado in the state tourney. "Really, we're just trying to get better. "If you focus on what's going...
I have a lot of respect for women. My mom did most of the raising of my brother, sister and me. While my dad was busy with his work my mom was the one who directed my world: She drove me to Boy Scout meetings, she took me and my buddies fishing and she tried to teach me how to dribble a basketball until she threw up her hands in frustration yelling, "You're thinking about it too much!" Having said that I have no problem with women in positions of power, management and work. It has always seemed perfectly natural and expected...

I have noticed a couple of recent letters to the editor calling for respect toward those in political office. That's all well and good; there needs to be more respect in society, but it needs to be earned. Respect is cheapened when it is not deserved. When it is given unearned to someone who demands it, it is downright worthless. So should politicians and other government employees be shown respect? Well, sure, the same respect that is due everyone alive is also due to them. But no extra respect is due them simply because of...
I t seems there isn't much left on the planet that humankind hasn't tried to domesticate, and if not attempting to domesticate, mankind has tried to keep most everything in captivity at one time or another, with varying degrees of success. In some cases, pulling creatures out of the wild is actually doing them a favor by postponing or preventing extinction. In other cases it is done just because it can be done. But captive housing is not to be confused with domestication efforts, which can get a tad bizarre. The list of...
TEXICO — You could argue that Tularosa has Texico's number of late. Mostly, the Wildcats have Jim Coleman, and that was enough to lift second-seeded Tularosa to a 26-21 Class 2A playoff semifinal win over the Wolverines on Friday night. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound senior got his team on the board with a 47-yard interception return early in the third quarter, then erased a one-point deficit when he went up over a Texico defender to haul in a 51-yard scoring pass from senior...

Guadalupe Flores, eyes welling and her voice cracking, pleaded for mercy at her sentencing Friday for killing Brandon Vann, a man she called her best friend. District Judge Stephen Quinn's response was 18 years in prison — a dozen short of the maximum 30 years District Attorney Matt Chandler sought after successfully convicting Flores, 27, of Clovis of second-degree murder. Flores' attorney James Klipstine said he plans to file and appeal within the next two weeks, asking the court to set aside her conviction. Last week,...
