  • Three dead in Clovis fire

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 27, 2017

CLOVIS — Three people were found dead in an "out building" that burned Sunday afternoon in the 200 block of Calhoun Street, Clovis police said. Police and firefighters responded to a report of a fire about 3 p.m., a police news release said. "Upon arrival, firefighters noted a small, detached out building in the back yard of the home. This outbuilding was engulfed in flames. Firefighters were told people were still inside of the structure. Firefighters battled the fire and when they were able to enter the structure found t... Full story

  • Shoppers pound pavement for perfect presents

Eamon Scarbrough and David Grieder|Updated Nov 26, 2017

Shoppers at the Portales Wal-Mart found Black Friday bargains without the rush typically associated with the “holiday.” Mark Hernandez of Clovis went to Portales on Friday to find bargains that he couldn’t get at home, and walked away with cookery, bedding, a deep fryer, and — his favorite — two laptop computers. Hernandez and his family participated in Black Friday “maybe five, 10 years ago,” and decided to return because of the new found ease of shopping during the weekend. “Of course, Black Friday’s extended out now,...

Information on pet parakeets and making zentangle artwork will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday at noon. (All times are Mountain.) If you’re looking for a pet for your child, how about considering a parakeet? Ray Pawley is a retired zoologist, and he says that budgies, or parakeets are extremely popular pets for many reasons. They are very friendly and easy to tame and some are capable of mimicking speech. Pawley lives in Hond...

  • Lose the bling when traveling

    Dnieka Hartsfield|Updated Nov 25, 2017

The skies and streets are busy with traveling during the holidays, but what you wear to travel in doesn't have to be. In fact, your outfit is one of the first and most important to decisions you'll make at the beginning of your travel plans. For starters, you definitely want to make sure what your wear is comfortable. But sometimes even comfort is not the key. According to the November 2017 issue of Town & Country magazine, there are ‘19 Things You Should Never Wear While T...

  • Dear Santa: Bring me some zectron

    David Stevens, Editor|Updated Nov 25, 2017

It was made of “amazing zectron.” It could leap tall buildings in a single bound. Not even the Super Bowl offered “50,000 pounds of compressed energy” like that modern marvel. At 98 cents, the Wham-O Super Ball was quite possibly the greatest toy Santa Claus ever left under an aluminum Christmas tree. It’s probably the best toy I ever received as a child of the ’60s. The Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots were a great concept, but the blue one knocked the red one’s block off every time.... Full story

  • Not all debates deserve attention

    Kevin Wilson, Managing Editor|Updated Nov 25, 2017

Two wrongs don’t make a right. Neither do two narcissists. The thing that I didn’t even bother making a bet about happened. Outspoken bragging President Donald Trump and outspoken bragging basketball dad LaVar Ball got into it. A few weeks ago, Ball’s son LiAngelo was among three UCLA basketball players on a team trip to China. They were arrested for shoplifting sunglasses. They ended up not playing, and stayed a few days longer than their Bruin teammates. They eventually flew back home, where an indefinite suspension await... Full story

  • Dare I switch up holiday traditions?

    Rob Langrell, Publisher|Updated Nov 25, 2017

It’s the time of year again for that great debate: Is it OK to gear up for Christmas before Thanksgiving is even celebrated? I’ve long been a believer that the Christmas decorations, the yard inflatables and even any conversations about gifts must stay on hold until after the turkey has been cooked, carved and consumed. Steadfast in my ways, it just seemed to make sense to me. Enjoy one before you move on to the next. Call it tradition. However, on Thanksgiving Day this yea... Full story

  • Thankful for blessings great and small

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Nov 25, 2017

On a long weekend set aside to give thanks, it’s definitely a good time to take stock of my blessings. I’m thankful always for my loving wife of 35 years. She loves me in spite of all my faults, picks me up when I’m down and shares the good and the bad in my life. I’m extremely blessed that the Lord has left her in my life through several health scares, including another one this fall. She has not had it easy as far as health from a life-long autoimmune disease to accidents th...

  • Manson's gone, but reasons to remember remain

    The Joplin Globe|Updated Nov 25, 2017

A week ago, you could have asked anyone of a certain age who they thought was the most evil person alive, and many of them would have answered without hesitation: Charles Manson. But no more. Last Sunday night Manson died at age 83. He had spent nearly a half-century in prison serving a life sentence. He was one of our worst nightmares and a waste of tax dollars to boot. There are two reasons, though, that we should remember this monster: First, because we should not forget the victims of his twisted plot. They were Sharon...

  • Always amazed by well-crafted tales

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Nov 25, 2017

Although the best fiction I’ve ever written is my resume, my lack of knack doesn’t stop me from being spellbound by wordsmith magicians birthing truth from lies. As young Navy spies in the ’70s, Sheila Schelling and I became separated in the jungles of Guam. Since I barely survived the monsoon coconut hand-grenades, until she recently resurfaced on Facebook, I never knew if the Ogden Nash devotee had pulled a Robinson Crusoe. After the North Carolina artist recommended readi...

  • Robertson tops Rams in 4A semifinals

    Eric Murray|Updated Nov 25, 2017

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Robertson High Cardinals pulled out all the stops Saturday to net a 20-14 Class 4A semifinal win over Portales. The Cardinals, playing Portales for the first time since losing last year's 4A title game 43-14, had a goal line stand to prevent a Rams go-ahead score with less than nine minutes remaining, then recorded a first down on a fake punt late that put them in the victory formation and into their third-straight 4A title game. "We just came up a little...

  • Rio Rancho tops Clovis in season opener

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 25, 2017

CLOVIS — There's never a good time for that volatile, judgmental relative to visit, but it might be the worst time for them to show up on Thursday. Likewise for the Clovis High Wildcats, there's no good time for a turnover on the basketball court. But still, they managed to show up at the worst times, as a young Wildcat team struggled in the halfcourt before falling 75-70 to Rio Rancho in it season opener. Derrick Reyes scored 16 points to lead four players in double f...

  • Cannon could come into millions

    David Grieder|Updated Nov 25, 2017

A major national defense bill that could bring pay raises to airmen and over $50 million for construction projects at Cannon Air Force Base is pending the president’s consideration. The National Defense Authorization Act establishes annual “policies and funding levels for the nation’s military and defense operations, which are then funded through annual appropriations bills,” according to a news release Nov. 16 from Sen. Tom Udall, D-New Mexico. The fiscal year 2018 iteration of the bill authorizes almost $700 billion...

  • Melrose routs Mountainair to claim four-peat in eight-man

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 25, 2017

MOUNTAINAIR — The Mountainair Mustangs scored on their first drive, the Melrose Buffaloes fell short on their 2-point conversion on their opening drive and it looked like the Mustangs would be the first team to challenge the Buffaloes this eight-man season. And then the first quarter ended. Nearly everything went the Buffaloes’ way after that, as they posted a 32-0 second quarter as part of a 56-0 run en route to a 76-24 victory Saturday afternoon. The Buffaloes (11-0), who got seven touchdowns from quarterback Sterling Sen...

Today’s family in need: This single grandmother is raising her two granddaughters, ages 5 and 7. The family is surviving on a fixed income, and the money the grandmother receives “barely covers the rent,” according to Salvation Army Lt. Kelly Berggren. “The girls attend (our) troops programs and are a joy to be around. Grandma would love to be able to provide a Christmas for the girls,” Berggren said. About the Empty Stocking Fund: The fund is a joint venture of the Salvation Army and The Eastern New Mexico News. The fund...
