  • Cannon solicits contractors for housing privatization

In order to comply with the DOD directive that all Air Force Bases are to have housing privatization, Cannon has joined with several bases from the Northern United States in negotiating contracts to solicit civilian contractors. Because at one time Cannon was slated for closure, efforts to transfer management of housing from military to civilian contractors were halted, said Marianne Long, housing privatization project manager, 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron. • 11-25 Police blotter

Samplings of recent calls received by Clovis-area law enforcement officers, according to reports: About 10 a.m. Nov. 17, an officer responded to a school in the 100 block of Commerce Way for a report of a student with a weapon. A school administrator said he had received a report that a male student had a knife at school, so he searched the 13-year-old and found a knife with a four-inch blade. The boy told the officer he just brought the knife to school to show some people. The officer noted intent to seek an arrest warrant... Full story

    CNJ staff

Two separate fires in residential structures kept Clovis firefighters moving Monday night. Just before 4:30 p.m., fire fighters were called to investigate smoke at an apartment complex at 501 Pile Street. About an hour later, the second call came in saying an unoccupied, condemned apartment complex in the area of Second and Ross streets was engulfed in flames. “They left the scene of the first one to respond to the second one,” Fire Chief Ray Westerman said. Westerman said both fires were extinguished without incident. The...

  • Clovis Salvation Army doing without credit card machines

    Liliana Castillo

Salvation Army ringers across the country are being armed with a bell, a kettle, sometimes a Santa hat and now a mobile credit card machine. Clovis Salvation Army Maj. Tammy Ray said New Mexico’s fickle weather is causing trouble for Clovis’ ringers as far as adding the machine to their list of equipment. “We do take credit and debit card donations over the phone or in the office,” Ray said. “We just won’t be adding that capability to the ringers.” Ray said ringers in Clovis are usually outside, meaning they are at the me...

CNJ staff photo: Tony Bullocks Susie Armijo, kitchen manager at Lighthouse Mission, carves one of 26 Thanksgiving turkeys Monday in preparation for Thursday's feast at the Lighthouse. Armijo said she and her staff plan on cooking a total of 31 turkeys. A nice, big turkey dinner is something nearly everyone, at least those raised in that tradition, longs for on Thanksgiving. Big community dinners in Clovis and Portales on Thursday aim to accomplish that goal — without embarrassment or shame for those who cannot afford it... Full story

  • Thanksgiving expression of gratitude

Freedom New Mexico If the pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians, who were present at the original Thanksgiving feast, somehow were transported to modern times to take part in the holiday as we know it today, even they would wonder why we have to suffer through another Detroit Lions football game. Thankfully, since NFL announcer and video game huckster John Madden has retired from television, we would not have to explain the caloric nightmare that is the “turducken” — a chicken stuffed inside a duck, which is then stuffed int... Full story

  • Ethics issues surface for TRICARE

Aetna Government Health Plans of Hartford, Conn., appears to have gained an unfair advantage in competing for TRICARE’s North Region support contract, valued at $16.7 billion, by hiring a former chief of staff at TRICARE headquarters to help the company draft its winning proposal. The Government Accountability Office, auditing arm of Congress, said the chief of staff had access to proprietary information on Aetna’s rival, Health Net Federal Services of Rancho Cordova, Calif., before leaving government, and also while wor... Full story

  • Thankful I can count many blessings

This Thanksgiving I am thankful for many things large and small. For instance, on the world stage I am thankful that Saddam Hussein finally got what he had coming. But I’m also thankful for more personal things like the fact that there are still airports and convenience stores that have pay phones. They are as rare as a kind word for a legislator, but they are essential to us Verizaphobics. I’m thankful that we have not had a terrorist act in our country since 9/11, due to the strength and dedication of our troops who are... Full story

  • China proves federal Internet regulations fail

Freedom New Mexico Why is it important to condemn government regulation of the Internet? You don’t have to look much further for an answer than China’s latest battle to preside over the “World of Warcraft” computer game. In a power struggle of galactic proportions, two bureaucratic Chinese government agencies are squabbling as to which is entitled to regulate the ultrapopular online fantasy role-playing game “World of Warcraft,” or “WoW.” China’s General Administration of Press and Publication, said that WoW’s creator, Ca... Full story

  • Animated flicks get two thumbs up

In the days of the double-feature movie, I was a big fan of the cartoons in between. Bugs, Daffy, Yosemite Sam and Foghorn Leghorn were what I measured good comedy against. After I grew up, I discovered the Looney Tunes gang still had a lot to offer for adults in tune to their subtle double-entendre. The kids could laugh at the characters’ silliness while the adults got their guffaws from the cleverness of the script writers and the human condition sometimes portrayed by the enduring animated characters. It’s no wonder tha...
