  • Souvenir still tops plaques, awards

    Kevin Wilson, Managing Editor|Updated Nov 18, 2017

Our newspaper did well at the recent New Mexico Press Association/Associated Press Managing Editors convention. I won’t bore you with the award listing, except to tell you it’s nice to be recognized no matter what. On your bad days, you tell yourself, “That award means I did one good day of work.” On your good days, you see them as standards you try to meet and surpass. But eventually, they blend in with the rest of the wall. The conventions are what I enjoy the most, to be honest. I get to see people I spend the entire year...

  • Public records access best protection for state's mentally ill

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Nov 18, 2017

We have a two-word response to the dangerously misguided legislation being proposed by state Rep. Gail Chasey that would greatly restrict public access to police videos of people with mental illness. “James Boyd.” Despite Chasey’s well-intentioned goal of protecting the privacy of mentally ill individuals who wind up facing police during a crisis, the Albuquerque Democrat’s bill would severely undermine public oversight of police, their actions and tactics, and even departmental policies. That public oversight was key to...

  • 'Bama Senate candidate a nightmare

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Nov 18, 2017

Outsiders watching Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore waving a pistol at a rally must have thought they were dreaming — or nightmaring. Ignoring past transgressions with his younger pistol, his lack of empathy for Dreamers and women needing health services from Planned Parenthood, being suspended from the State Supreme Court twice for flouting judicial rulings about religious symbols on taxpayer property and same-sex marriage, and colloquializing about “blacks and whites fig...

  • Bidding farewell to Clovis musician

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Nov 18, 2017

CLOVIS — It takes some people decades to figure what they want to do with their life, but that wasn't the case for Clovis musician Bill Case. "Once he picked up an instrument at 8 years old, he always just had a thing for it," Case's grandson Josh said. Case, who passed away this week at the age of 87, was well known in Clovis for his performances of classic rock, country, rhythm & blues and jazz music. Case's passion for music, especially 1950s and 60s music, led him to p...

For the past 10 years the American Legion Riders have hosted a Christmas party where free toys are distributed to underprivileged children for the holidays. But before they can hold the C...

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 18, 2017

On this date ... 1972: Clovis Mayor Chick Taylor was a good sport as he bought the first fruitcake of a fundraiser being held by the Clovis High School marching band. But he might have also felt a sense of obligation since his salesperson was his daughter, Pam, a member of the Wildcat band. The two of them posed for a Clovis News-Journal photo, along with other band members Keith Gibbons, JoAnn Martinez, Charlene Naylor, and Julio Rubio. All band members and band boosters were peddling fruitcakes for the fundraiser. Proceeds...

  • Landmark business closing its doors

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Nov 18, 2017

PORTALES — For 62 years, Woody’s Jewelry has been providing gifts to commemorate whatever needs celebrating around Roosevelt County. But customers learned this month that the downtown staple will close Dec. 27. Owner Danny Woodward took over the business in 1979 from his father H.L. Woodward, who started it upon his return to Portales from World War II in 1955. “My father was a World War II vet, was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, didn’t have many career options at the time, and this was one of them,” he said. Woodward...

  • Big second half moves ENMU men's basketball team to 3-1

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 18, 2017

MONMOUTH, Ore. — Things were a little dicey for the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team in the first half, but the Greyhounds’ offense sizzled in the second, allowing them to take command and thump Azusa Pacific 86-70 on Saturday at the Western Oregon/Doubletree by Hilton D2 Shootout. The win lifted ENMU to 3-1, matching the program’s best four-game start since 2005-06. The Greyhounds also bounced back nicely from their first defeat of the season, Friday’s 99-89 overtime loss to Dixie State. “Today’s...

LAS VEGAS, New Mexico — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team earned its first win of the season on Saturday, walloping New Mexico Highlands 53-34 at the John A. Wilson Complex, and improving to 1-2 in the process. Defense paved the way for Eastern’s momentous win, holding the Cowgirls to those 34 points on just 22 percent shooting. NMHU’s point total was the fewest allowed by ENMU since 2006, and the first time the Greyhounds held an opponent to less than 40 since 2013. It was a refreshing and necessa...

  • Prairie dugouts weren't pretty, but got job done

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Nov 17, 2017

Frontier prairie architecture wasn’t too elegant but it was extremely functional. As I ushered a group of mostly neophyte plainsmen into a replica half-dugout dwelling this week, it was easy for folks to imagine why they wouldn’t want to live there but it took a guy like me that never lived in one but had read and heard a lot about them to explain why they made sense. I was leading a Leadership Portales group on a historic tour of town for history and heritage month and we...
