  • Texico pulls six-peat in 2A, Melrose upset in 1A

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 16, 2019

RIO RANCHO — The Texico Wolverines hadn’t lost a set at the Class 2A state tournament heading into Saturday’s championship against a Mescalero Apache team they’d already swept. The Melrose Buffaloes hadn’t lost a set in the Class 1A championship, and hadn’t lost a match all season. The funny thing about the state tournament is none of that matters when the title match starts. Texico had to twice fight back from one-game deficits before winning in five, while Melrose was upended by district rival Logan in a repeat of the 2018...

  • Cats crush Bears in quarterfinals

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Nov 16, 2019

CLOVIS — Clovis High’s football team is moving on, yet won’t have to move an inch. In their first home state tournament game since 2016, the Wildcats pulled away from defending 6A champion La Cueva Friday at Leon Williams Stadium and won 37-17, earning a berth in this coming weekend’s semifinal. And for that matchup, the second-seeded ’Cats will spend this Friday where they were this past Friday — Leon Williams Stadium — with Cleveland coming in for a 7 p.m. kickoff. They...

  • Portales pulls away late

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Nov 16, 2019

PORTALES — Portales’ football team knows that even with a first-round bye it takes three steps to win a state 4A championship. And the Rams took Step 1 on Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Stadium. With a punishing defense and a steady, persistent offense, the second-seeded Rams pulled away from Silver late and posted a 33-7 victory in Saturday’s quarterfinal. Silver’s nickname is the Fighting Colts, and fight they did. Well into the fourth quarter, they trailed only 20-7, h...

  • Buffs back on top

    Dave Wagner - Staff Writer|Updated Nov 16, 2019

MELROSE — Suffice it to say, Tristan Sena had a full night in his final football game at Melrose High School. To say he was a stat-stuffer may be a bit of an understatement. Sena scored six touchdowns — in four different ways — and threw for another while intercepting two passes as Melrose captured its fifth 8-man state championship in six years with a 56-44 victory over Tatum on Friday night. The third-seeded Buffaloes (11-1), outplayed for much of the first half, turne...

  • Texico, Melrose reach title matches

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 16, 2019

RIO RANCHO — Championship Saturday saw a flurry of activity at the New Mexico State volleyball tournament, but plenty of familiar faces in the final matches. Texico and Melrose both made their way back into their respective state title games — Melrose in 1A and Texico in 2A — as a match-heavy format kept the Santa Ana Star Center busy throughout the weekend. Saturday evening title matches saw Texico facing off against Mescalero Apache and Melrose set to face Logan in a rematch of last year’s 1A championship. In prior years,...

  • UTPB sweeps Greyhounds

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 16, 2019

  • Maldonado asks state win be overturned

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Nov 16, 2019

CLOVIS — Toward the finish line they ran, promising an exciting end to the season’s biggest cross country race. Clovis’ Jerrick Maldonado and Piedra Vista’s Triston Charles were neck-and-neck in last weekend’s 5A championships. They crossed at around the same time, but who won? Maldonado was depleted, falling down, nearly passing out from dehydration. Clovis head coach Mark Bussen helped tend to his runner, helped get him re-hydrated. He knew Maldonado had done well one way or the other, but helping him with hydration...

  • Steers ousted by McCamey

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 16, 2019

LAMESA, Texas — The season came to an all-too-early end for the Farwell Steers on Friday night in the first round of the Texas Class 2A Division II playoffs. McCamey used an early safety and touchdown for a 10-point lead and the Badgers went on to a 30-15 victory in a bi-district round matchup. McCamey (4-7) will take on Stratford this weekend in an area round contest. “I thought we’d have a much better shot (to win),” first-year Steers coach Jhett Norman said Saturday. “We didn’t play very good on offense. Our defense kep...

  • ENMU women off to hot start

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 16, 2019

PORTALES — Hope springs eternal in mid-autumn for every basketball team everywhere — pro, college or high school. For the Eastern New Mexico women’s team, there’s more than hope. The Greyhounds have legitimate reason for optimism. They were a winning team last season. They are already 3-0 this season, coming off Wednesday’s 73-62 road victory over Northern New Mexico. They have height, they have ball-handlers, they have game from the perimeter, they have experience. It could be a special team in the very early stages of a spe...

BY THE STAFF OF THE NEWS PORTALES — Led by junior goalkeeper Ross Dalton, the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team put five players on All-Lone Star Conference squads announced by the league on Thursday. ENMU finished the season 12-5-1, a school record for wins, and was 4-5-1 in conference matchups. Dalton, from Liverpool, England, was the lone first-team selection for ENMU. El PASO, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team dropped its third and final exhibition game against Division I competition this season on Friday night, falling to Texas-El Paso 71-57. The Greyhounds, who lost in earlier exhibitions at Tennessee and New Mexico, had the lead early in this one against the Miners. But UTEP took advantage of ENMU foul trouble to wrest the lead before halftime. The Hounds cut a double-digit deficit to seven in the second half after an 11-1 run, but back-to-back 3-p...
