SPORTS EDITOR [email protected] Fighting for the district runnerup spot and a first-round home game next week in the Class 6A playoffs, the Clovis High football team will look to defend its home turf against La Cueva High tonight in the final regular-season game of the season for both teams at Leon Williams Stadium. With both entering the contest with 6-3 overall and 3-1 district records, the Wildcats and Bears will go head-to-head for the second spot in the district and all but assure a first-round playoff game at home....

  • Terry: I'm a fan of baseball, just not on TV

Baseball was always very good to me — I just never could really stand to watch it on TV. Growing up, from April to October I didn’t go anywhere without a baseball and glove. You could play a game of catch waiting on irrigation water or while dad cut a load of grain. Occasionally you might even stop somewhere where a pickup game would break out and it was always better to have your own glove than a loaner. Karl Terry I put in a lot of hours at the ballpark, all the way up int... Full story

  • ENMU ROUNDUP: Hounds fall short in basketball exhibitions

Staff report ALBUQUERQUE — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team played with New Mexico for much of the game on Friday, but the Lobos pulled away from a one-point lead over the final 10 minutes to claim an 88-66 victory on Friday night at The Pit. • Wildcats topple Bears in second half

SPORTS EDITOR [email protected] In a game of extreme highs and lows, the Clovis High football team managed to hold off La Cueva in the final minutes of the contest Friday night for a 21-18 win. The win will hand the Wildcats (7-3, 4-1 district) a second-place finish in District 6-2A, and presumably a first-round home game in the state playoffs once seeding is announced. La Cueva (6-4, 3-2 district) will still probably make the playoffs, even if it’s as a bottom-four seed. With a Bears field goal, followed by a t...

  • Rams repeat as 4-4A champs

    Matthew Asher

STAFF WRITER [email protected] It may have been closer than they wanted in the first half, but the Portales Rams are now the two-time defending Class 4-4A champions following their 40-16 victory over NMMI Friday night. The first half was a back-and-forth affair with Portales (9-1, 4-0) scoring on every possession and NMMI (3-7, 1-3) scoring on three of their four. The Rams first got on the board with a 13-yard pass from Junior Ramirez to a wide-open Tyrese Dawson on a fourth-and-goal play. It should be noted that starting...
