  • Pages past — Nov. 4

On this date ... 1967: The New Mexico Savings and Loan League was urging voters to approve a constitutional amendment to allow state government to deposit state funds in savings and loan associations. Voters approved the measure. 1954: Two airmen stationed at Clovis Air Force Base were killed in a crash on Seventh Street. State police said the airmen, both teenagers, were riding a motorcycle when a tr...

  • Letter to the editor — Nov. 4

Zoo’s value more than numbers Regarding the Oct. 19 Clovis News Journal editorial: Hillcrest Park Zoo is an educational asset to the community, and as such deserves public funding and support. Both children and adults need the personal interaction with living, breathing animals that HPZ provides. Do not denigrate the importance of the zoo by reducing its value to mere numbers on a balance sheet. Margaret Rogers Seaford, New York...

  • Commissary sales fall by 4.3 percent

Military update The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) faced a tough operating environment in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 as sales fell by 4.3 percent. The drop was due in part to commissaries closing for six days during a government shutdown last fall. But patrons also saw the worth of their benefit debated for months after the Obama administration proposed cutting DeCA’s annual appropriation of $1.4 billion to $400 million by 2017, with the idea that average shopper savings of 31 percent could be pared by one t...

  • Learning what it's like to grow old

Guest columnist I asked my grandpa what it felt like to grow old. I knew my question would take him some time to answer, so I said nothing. I let him gather his thoughts. When I was a boy, Grandpa once complimented me on this habit. He told me it was good that I asked a question and gave a person silence. And being that any compliment from him was few and far between, this habit soon became an integral part of my personality. Grandpa stared out the window and looked at the empty bird feeder that hung from an overgrown tree....

  • 'Trick or treat' and memories of Halloweens past

    Curtis Shelburne

Well, I got to go "trick or treating" the other night. Halloween it was. I'd not done that in a long time, but it surely brought back some vivid memories. Halloween has, since my childhood, never been all that big on my list of holidays. Even as an adult, after I'd learned enough history to know just a little about "All Hallows' Eve," it's barely been for me a bump in the road on the way to Thanksgiving and Christmas. When our kids were little, we did the usual "dress up"...

  • Portales mayor says no conflict about water board position

Projects Editor [email protected] Portales Mayor Sharon King acknowledges she may have an advantage today when the board behind the Ute Water Project decides whether she or one of two other candidates will become the regional authority’s first paid executive director. • Oregon case stirs assisted suicide debate

Staff writer [email protected] Recent news of terminally ill patient Brittany Maynard's use of Oregon's “death with dignity” law to end her life is spurring renewed interest in the debate over the legality of assisted suicide in other states, particularly New Mexico. While it is a prosecutable offense in eastern New Mexico for a physician to assist someone in committing suicide, that’s not the case in Albuquerque. The New Mexico statute at the heart of the debate is NMSA 1978, 30-2-4, enacted in 1963. The statute state...
