The Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico is celebrating the success of our most recent food drive "Stuff Nancy's Truck" in which communities donated over 8,000 pounds of food and more than $500. Our food drive was also an opportunity to celebrate "Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico Day." An event like this is only possible because of the support we receive throughout the communities we serve. Thank you to Ray Sullivan for spearheading this campaign and his help throughout the 10 days we stuffed "Nancy's Truck." Thank you to the...

LOVINGTON — The Portales Rams did themselves proud Friday night. It wasn't enough to beat Lovington, but PHS made the Wildcats work hard for a 21-0 District 4-3A victory which sets up a battle for the district title next week at Ruidoso. Lovington (3-5, 1-0 district), ranked third in 3A despite its record, has suffered losses to the top two teams in Class 4A and top-ranked St. Michael's in Class 3A. Still, the Wildcats found themselves in a scoreless tie with the Rams until senior Omar Arroyo returned a punt 72 yards for a t...
CARLSBAD — Clovis High's cross country teams couldn't pull off a sweep in Friday's District 4-5A meet, but they felt good about their performances anyway. The Lady Wildcats put four runners in the top five to successfully defend their team title with 21 points, followed by Hobbs with 41 and Carlsbad with 72. As expected, though, the Hobbs boys were too tough and won with 23 points to 46 for the Wildcats and 67 for the host Cavemen. Senior Brittany Collins cruised to the girls individual title in a time of 20 minutes, 14 s...
Corey Robinson is hoping the third time is the charm. The first-year Clovis Christian football coach leads his team into the 6-man state quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Saturday in Santa Fe against third-seeded New Mexico School for the Deaf (8-1). The Roadrunners had their way with CCS earlier this season, winning 55-0 in Sante Fe in the season opener and 56-6 two weeks later at Jim Hill Field, a game added when both teams were trying to fill an open date. "We played better," Robinson said of the latter tilt. "We just couldn't get...
SAN ANTONIO — The Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team isn't acting like the only unranked squad in the four-team Lone Star Conference. The Greyhounds pushed ninth-ranked Incarnate Word for the second time this season, falling to the Cardinals 2-0 when UIW broke through for two goals in the final 12 minutes. ENMU (10-6-1, 1-3-1 LSC) closes its season on Sunday at Midwestern State (9-2-5, 1-2-2). A defense attorney says an apparent attempt to save money in 9th Judicial District Court could wind up costing taxpayers thousands more in new trials. The court clerk's office segregated prospective jurors who only spoke Spanish into a single panel — one of five panels of prospective jurors assembled Aug. 1 for the current court term that ends Nov. 30. "Unfortunately," said defense attorney James Klipstine, "the United States Supreme Court has said you can't do that." Klipstine has already filed a request arguing for a new t...

Americans are selfish when it comes to voting, according to one Eastern New Mexico University professor. History professor Suzanne Balch-Lindsay says voters in Tuesday's election most likely will select the presidential candidate they feel will provide them the most safety and security. She says it's a factor that never changes because the average American often worries about protecting "me and mine." Christina Calloway: Portales News-Tribune Eastern New Mexico history...
There just wasn't as much urgency to vote early for Tuesday's presidential election compared to four years ago, and thus the reason why Curry County Clerk Coni Jo Lyman says early voting numbers are down. As early voting ended Saturday night in Curry County, a total of 5,666 cast ballots in-person, compared to the 6,269 voters that participated in early voting in 2008's presidential election. "It was consistent day after day but it just wasn't swamped like it was in 2008," said Lyman about the Curry County Courthouse during...

We will accept the results with dignity — and possibly a doobie (while listening to "What a Fool Believes.") We promise not to slander Mormon Mitt, Christian/Muslim Barack or Humanist Gary with vicious morning-after comments about: - a prophet reading 60-pound golden plates by using a seer stone in the bottom of a hat,...

One of my Texas buddies was talkin' about stockdogs "down south" being different than those "up north". I agreed, depending on where you draw the Mason-Dixon Line. I describe those coming from the cooler climes as "suave, smooth, nervous and quick." Think of hockey pucks, machine guns and playing zone defense. Border Collies, Kelpies and Aussies fit that description. The handler continuously moves his canine leaf-blower into position to "blow" the sheep through the gate. It's almost like opposing magnets dancing. In the hot...

ALBUQUERQUE — Senior guard Hannah Altheide got the Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team off to a fast start Saturday, hitting a 3-pointer on the game's first possession. The New Mexico Lobos eventually took control, though, and pulled away to a 56-37 exhibition win over the Zias at The Pit. It was a tuneup for season openers for both teams scheduled on Friday — the Zias play at Oklahoma Panhandle State while the Lobos host Northern Arizona. Altheide added a free throw on the next trip to make it 4-0, but the...
Greyhound senior wide receiver Chase Kyser gets tripped up by Texas A&M Lion JT. Bates in the second quarter. Kyser lead the Hounds with four receptions for 42 yards. BLACKWATER DRAW — Sometimes kickers share a similar plight to referees and offensive linemen — nobody notices them much unless they screw up. Eastern New Mexico University sophomore Dylan Baca had a tough first half Saturday, helping set up an early Texas A&M-Commerce field goal by shanking a 16-yard punt and...
Family put Scot Stinnett in the newspaper business, and inadvertently kept him from trying his craft at a bigger newspaper. One week after receiving a New Mexico reporter's highest honor, the Portales native insists that family put him there, too. The 1974 Portales High graduate, who got his start at the Portales News-Tribune before he was a teenager and has run the De Baca County News for the last 20 years, was inducted Oct. 27 into the New Mexico Press Association Hall of...
