Although Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner met over the weekend with his counterpart in Beijing, putatively to ease tensions, there is little question the Obama administration is gearing up for a concerted economic/diplomatic offensive against China, which U.S. officials accuse of keeping the value of its currency, the renminbi, too low. This may be an election-time maneuver. Democrats across the country are accusing their Republican counterparts of “shipping jobs overseas,” and China — a country with an und...

It wasn’t the first time I’d been in the building early in the morning, but as always, I was taken aback by the rich sight and sound of the entire elementary school — including students, staff, and...

In our little country school we had basketball goals on a dirt lot, and girls and boys played together, choosing up teams. In fact, I don’t remember any discussions at all about boys and girls competing together in sports. We all learned not to dribble the basketball in the goatheads and other sticker weeds if we wanted it to hold air. We also learned not to worry if the ball landed on a rock and flew out of bounds. This was in the 1950s, the time the “education gurus” decided to consolidate the small rural school distr...
