  • PREP FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: Eagles face tough task on road

    Dave Wagner

The Clovis Christian Eagles are making their first appearance in the state football playoffs since becoming a full-fledged New Mexico Activities Association member three years ago. Still, the eighth-seeded Eagles are hoping to soar when they play top-ranked and unbeaten Gateway Christian in an eight-man quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. today in Roswell. The teams met in the season opener at Jim Hill Field. The Warriors (9-0), who last year won the six-man title by beating Melrose, p... Full story

(CNJ staff photo: Tony Bullocks) Before the Clovis Christian volleyball team even began practice this season, coach Ceil Boatman sat her players down with some paperwork. • Laptop sparks new interest in technology

Computers, laptop, PalmPilots, BlackBerry phones, iPods, Mp3— technological devices are everywhere we turn. I am not sure what half of these “toys” can do, or what some of them look like. But I am an enthusiastic shopper. In my hands, technological devices become an opportunity to spend significant amounts of money. On the other hand, my husband takes the time to research the products and manages to find good deals. Technology is not just fun for him. His purchases are usually right on target and not very expensive. This... Full story

  • Wood-burning stoves require more attention

    Freedom Newspapers

Now that cooler temperatures are creeping in like mice beneath a breadbox, I had to do something I’ve never done before. Use a wood stove. The only heating elements I’ve ever known include hissing radiators, steam from the rice pot that inevitably boils over and a portable heat fan I once took to work where my coworker blasted it so hard it nearly melted the letters off our computer keyboards. Even though the wood stove is commonly found in older homes — like my 1909 Oregon farmhouse and others that dapple Eastern New Mexic...

  • Jana Stanfield gives benefit concert at Portales High School

Her voice carries with it the assurance that you, too, can be as grounded and centered as she is. Her voice carries with it the confidence that, since she is an ordinary, everyday person who has come to this level of awareness, you can achieve that same level. Her stage presence is part of that which creates the atmosphere. You cannot help but come alive when she begins to sing, nor can you help but identify with her in her sometimes humorous, sometime poignant exploration of what it means to be human, in this place, in this...

  • Influenza causes downfall of great men, women

    Bob Huber

I’m convinced that influenza is the curse of great men. It was undoubtedly the root cause of Napoleon’s Waterloo, Noah Webster’s misspellings and Custer’s — well, the Little Big Horn was no place to sneeze, because Sioux Indians in those days could hear an antelope sniffle five miles away. Anyway, a flu bug recently bit me. It had been lurking in a dark shadow in my office like a cobweb you can’t spot until it drops from the ceiling on guests for dinner. By noon I was exhausted. By nightfall I contemplated suicide. By...

  • For Clovis’ cutest couple, it was love at first sight

    Don McAlavy

Bob Vivian, back in 1978, gave me a 1924 Clovis High School “All-Band” photo. What appeals to those who see it in the Curry County History book, page 77, at the Clovis library, is Selecta Cumpton, the band’s mascot, whom everyone called Midget. As a child she was so small that the family could only find soft baby shoes to fit her. To save wear on them, her brothers of normal size would carry her the long distance to school in Chicago where she was probably born. She came to Clovis to live with her relatives. Mrs. Charl...

  • CHS FOOTBALL: Cats shoot for 4-5A title

With the Class 5A state playoffs looming, Clovis will attempt to lock down the District 4-5A title and a top seed as the Wildcats hit the road today to face Carlsbad at Ralph Bowyer Stadium. With a win in their regular-season finale, the second-ranked Wildcats will capture their fourth straight 4-5A title and an automatic berth in the state playoffs. The top two teams in each district automatically qualify for the 12-team state tournament, and the top four seeds earn a first-round bye. The Cavemen (3-6, 0-1 district) had a...
