CLOVIS — The Clovis City Commission looks to have a light agenda for its 5:15 p.m. meeting today, with only one item under the regular agenda — a $54,000 sewer line study in association with U.S. 60/84 improvements. The commission will also have a brief discussion regarding its study session last week on the Clovis Area Transit System. Assistant City Manager Claire Burroughes said a pair of citizens who use CATS wanted to address the commission to discuss fixed routes and tha...

  • Sandia incorporating new learning strategies

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy|Updated Nov 2, 2017

If you walk into any classroom at Sandia Elementary, you might hear the teacher calling out, “Class, Class;” immediately after which you'll hear the entire class respond, “Yes, Yes!” in exactly the same tone. Sometimes there are funny variations, such as, “Class-osaurus!” to which they reply, “Yes-osaurus!” or “Class-ity-class!” with “Yess-ity-yes!” Matthew Vetterly, principal at Sandia, said the entire school was now on board with a unique interactive system of instruction,...

  • Secret's out on First United dressing recipe

    Betty Williamson|Updated Nov 2, 2017

After 63 years, it’s hard to have any secrets. But as the folks at First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Ave. C, Portales, throw their 64th annual turkey dinner today, I’m going to spill two. Kevin Wilson|Updated Nov 2, 2017

PORTALES — When Eastern New Mexico University first looked at the prospect of playing West Liberty, it was with the knowledge it would be the 10th scheduled game — ensuring the team would be playoff-eligible. Now that the trip to West Virginia is upon the Greyhounds, the playoff thoughts clearly loom larger. The stakes are simple: If the 21st-ranked Greyhounds (7-1) can defeat the Hilltoppers on the road tonight, they'll be back in Portales on Friday with eight days to pre...

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 2, 2017

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University had been struggling to find offense throughout the entire women’s soccer season, with 18 goals in 18 games and never more than three in a contest.
