  • New Mexico sets infection, death records

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Oct 31, 2020

The state reported its two largest days of COVID-19 infections with four-digit days Thursday and Friday, including a record 1,082 cases Thursday. Another record was reached Friday, with 13 deaths reported from COVID-19 to bring the state total to 1,007. None of those deaths were recorded in Curry or Roosevelt counties, which accounted for 62 cases over Thursday and Friday. Through Friday, Curry County had seen an October accounting for almost half of its total cases since the pandemic began in March — 851 of a total 1,615. O...

  • Area reaches historically low temperatures

    Lily Martin, Staff writer|Updated Oct 31, 2020

Historically low temperatures hit Curry and Roosevelt Counties last week, with Clovis and Portales seeing numbers in the teens. Neither Clovis nor Portales saw record-breaking snowfalls as expected, but they did get halfway there. Clovis saw over 2.5 inches accumulating during the storm. The record is from October of 1936 when 5 inches blanketed the city. After receiving over 2 inches of snow last week, Portales' 4-inch snowfall record from 1936 remains intact. Other areas...

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Oct 31, 2020

FARWELL - Momentum shifted big-time twice on Friday night - and quickly. In a battle for the Class 2A Division II District 2 title, Panhandle dominated early and built a 14-0 advantage. Then Farwell scored twice in a span of 10 seconds and rallied back to lead at halftime. But it was all Panthers after that. Panhandle put together a stunning 35-point third quarter, including three touchdowns by senior Jayse Edwards, and cruised to a 56-21 victory over the Steers. Panthers...

Ace and Chance find themselves on the wrong side of the law inside the meanest, dirtiest prison in the Arizona territory. When a barroom brawl lands Ace and Chance Jensen in jail, it’s just the beginning of a nightmare that will never end. Their jailmates are army deserters. Even worse, their jailers assume Ace and Chance are deserters, too. Things go from bad to worse awfully fast. One prisoner tries...

  • I have faith the sun is going to come up Wednesday

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Oct 31, 2020

This could quite possibly be the last column you ever see from me. Yes, stars were aligning and the nation was split to polar opposition as I penned this missive. The Dodgers had won their first World Series in over three decades and no one but four or five die-hard fans even knew it had been that long. They go into the books, as one of those die-hard fans sadly noted, with an asterisk by the entry. But hey they also have the distinction of winning a championship in the...

  • Even light Election Day turnout could mean record numbers

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 31, 2020

The final day of early voting was still wrapping up at press time for The News, but even a light Election Day turnout will mean one of the largest electorates in state history. Through Friday, 739,359 New Mexicans had cast ballots either in-person or by returning their absentee by mail ballots. That is already nearly 92% of the 2016 electorate in the Land of Enchantment, and nearly 89% of the state record of 833,365 set by New Mexicans in 2008. Curry County, through Friday, had 11,544 ballots cast — 8,448 in person and 3...

  • Opinion: Commercial radio capitalism at its best

    Danny Tyree, Syndicated columnist|Updated Oct 31, 2020

Did you realize that commercial radio got its start on Nov. 2, 1920, when legendary KDKA in Pittsburgh broadcast the results of the Harding-Cox presidential race? Almost overnight, radio transitioned from domination by ham operators to an actual business with schedules, programming and sponsors. Now the world has experienced an entire century peppered with FDR’s “Fireside Chats,” serialized “Captain Midnight” adventures, the original soap operas, traffic and weather reports, Top 40 countdowns, sportscasts (I still remember...

  • Opinion: Barrett good conservative role model

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated columnist|Updated Oct 31, 2020

At the beginning of the Senate confirmation hearings on the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, Lindsay Graham observed that it was a great moment for young conservative women because they finally had someone they could look to as a role model on the highest court in the land. Graham was on to something. Conservative women have been called “not the right kind of women” for years in the mainstream media and among those who always talk about “em...

  • Early college program more than doubles

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Oct 31, 2020

CLOVIS — Clovis Municipal Board of Education members received positive news on a collaboration still in its infancy, the Clovis Early College High School program, during its Tuesday meeting. Melissa Winn, a CHS counselor who oversees the program, reported the program more than doubled in its second year, with 146 students enrolled compared to 65 in 2019-20. The population is 93 female and 53 male, which runs close to CCC’s demographics of 70% female. The program includes 56 students, or 38% of participants, who are first-gene...

  • Opinion: Republicans lending QAnon legitimacy

    John Micek, Syndicated columnist|Updated Oct 31, 2020

In a normal universe, the baseless and appalling QAnon conspiracy theory would be the plot to the worst action thriller you’ve ever seen. If you don’t know by now, QAnon adherents subscribe to the utterly bonkers proposition that President Donald Trump is heroically fighting against a diffuse and secretive cabal of devil worshipers and child molesters scattered across the most elite levels of government, business, and the media. To take it to its “Sharknado-iest” extremes, the theory also posits that a violent reckoni...

  • Opinion: Praying Trump wins big on Tuesday

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated columnist|Updated Oct 31, 2020

It doesn’t matter who wins on Tuesday, America is in for big trouble. If it’s Joe Biden, the Democrat Party’s street gangs will celebrate by rioting in the streets. If Donald Trump wins re-election, Biden’s supporters will be so enraged they’ll riot, loot and burn everything they can — and the liberal media will say they had every right to express their anger. I live in Los Angeles, which government law-and-order experts say is not likely to riot and burn because of this wee...

  • Opinion: Biden plan assault on common sense

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated columnist|Updated Oct 31, 2020

Joe Biden wants to take one of the great American success stories of the past several decades and drive it into the ground. He would turn his back on the stupendous wealth represented by proven reserves of oil and gas in this country. Rather than focusing on producing cheap, abundant energy — a key ingredient to human progress through all of human history — he’d embark on the fool’s errand of trying to adjust the world’s thermostat 80 years from now. After a 50-year effort to...

  • Opinion: Oil, gas will be needed for years to come

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 31, 2020

In 30 years, eight of 10 cars sold globally will likely be electric. That’s a prediction from IHS Markit energy expert Dan Yergin and one that appears to dovetail a progressive political vision of a world free of oil companies. But what that prediction really means, assuming it comes true, is that the U.S. will need oil and gas for many decades to come. The question is, how much oil and gas? Two trends will help answer that question. One, how quickly will people ditch their gasoline cars and diesel trucks? And two, how m...

  • MainStreet part of 'cash mob' event

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 31, 2020

  • Mask-wearing resolution defeated

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Oct 31, 2020

CLOVIS — Bobby Sandoval has repeatedly dedicated his end-of-meeting commissioner reports to asking Curry County citizens to wear masks and practice social distancing to combat the COVID-19 pandemic wave that has hit the county. Fellow commissioners decided his message should stay there, and eliminated from Thursday’s special meeting agenda a resolution penned by Sandoval encouraging mask wearing in public. The 3-2 vote essentially had the same effect as defeating the resolution had it remained on the agenda. Commissioner Set...
