  • Clovis progresses, but falls to Roswell in sweep

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 31, 2018

CLOVIS — Tuesday’s volleyball match was perhaps a glimpse into the future for an improving Clovis team. But it also signaled the present, displaying a young team that still hasn’t quite yet arrived. In their regular-season finale at Rock Staubus Gymnasium, the Lady Wildcats looked able to hang with a quality Roswell team, grabbing the lead in each set. But, they ultimately lost all three and were swept 25-18, 25-20, 25-23. Somewhat deceptive numbers, because Clovis competed throughout. “I think it’s the best game we’ve pla...

  • Faith: Jesus still the best friend any of us have

    Curtis Shelburne, Guest columnist|Updated Oct 31, 2018

If I ever write anything wise — you know, the kind of pithy one-sentence bit of proverb-like wisdom that shows up in quotation books and on Internet “great quotes” sites — I hope I can avoid using any one word in the string that is detrimental to my proverb’s multi-century shelf life. Earlier this year, during Clovis High School’s 90-day planning process, one of the areas identified for improvement was creating a more positive school culture, for both students and staff. CHS Instructio...

    David Stevens, Editor|Updated Oct 31, 2018

Thomas “Black Jack” Ketchum failed in his attempt to rob the Colorado and Southern Railway on Aug. 16, 1899. That happened near Folsom in northeast New Mexico. He ultimately got himself killed over it. Newspapers of the day reported a railroad employee’s bullet hit him in the right elbow, knocking him backward off the train. Law officers found him nearly unconscious beside the tracks the next day; they transported him to a hospital where his injured arm was amputated. Thing... Full story

On this date ... 1963: Area trick-or-treaters were tricked by the weather. Just after dark, "when witches (were) riding their broomsticks," rain began to fall across the region. Soon, the rain turned to the season's first snowfall, the Clovis News-Journal reported. "Most of the trick-or-treaters, clad in skimpy costumes of skeletons and scarecrows, had to be whisked home by their older brothers and sisters. Many of them still got soaked," the newspaper said. One tearful...
