  • Local ghost hunters seek adventure

Matt Weiner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 30, 2024

On a warm October night, the trio peeled off Clovis' Seventh Street into a cemetery. After entering, their sedan wobbled over uneven gravel until parking at a beige mausoleum. It's difficult to tell what's scarier: How quiet it was or how dark it was. Unpredictability and tombstones don't mix well. For most people, their fight or flight instincts are screaming "Flee! Flee! Flee!" But this trio – Jeff Conner, Jason Kapera and Renaee Latham – aren't most people. They're gho...

  • Ghostly guests and Halloween hijinks part of Clovis history

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 30, 2024

Bill Southard must have enjoyed Halloween. At least he wrote a lot about it when he was managing editor at the Clovis News-Journal for much of the 1970s and early 1980s. Some of his spooky reports were funny – we'll get to the naked woman in a minute – and some were real-life scary – like the time Clovis leaders asked kids to skip trick-or-treating due to concerns about poison candy. He wrote about the "good old days" of the holiday, "when kids used a good deal of ingenuity in the tricks they performed." There was the time...

  • Specters I have seen … and one I have not

Grant McGee, the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 30, 2024

I’ve only seen one thing I consider a ghost. It was the night of Jan. 28, 1986. If that day doesn’t ring a bell, don’t worry, I had to look it up too: It was the day the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up. I was living in West Virginia then in a big ol’ 19th century ramshackle house that had been converted into apartments. Anyway, I was slipping into bed, when something white on the ceiling caught my eye. It was a hand. Once I turned my attention to it, it slowly fell down and in moments passed through the wooden floor....

Matt Weiner, The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 29, 2024

At Celebratory Recovery – the place that helped Liz Reese find sobriety – it was business as usual that Oct. 2. Before the faith-based recovery meeting kicked off at Portales’ First Baptist Church, she chatted with friends and munched on sloppy joes. During it, she read Scripture and handed out sobriety chips. Afterward, she maintained her duties as the church’s custodian by helping clean up.  In those simple acts, Reese, who said she was addicted to meth and cocaine,...

  • Faith: Prayers, worship precious not for productive results but for love

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Oct 29, 2024

A “teaser” on the front of the little magazine touted an article inside: “How to Triple Your Answers to Prayer.” I found myself wondering what might be prescribed. Incantations? A cauldron filled with a steaming potion featuring eye of newt, tongue of frog? Could I get more answers to prayer (answers that I like) if my technique was better or my recipe more precise? Is the bottom line the number of really “good” answers I get and catalog? I think I’d like the guy who said...

  • Opinion: Harris campaign has hit bottom

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 29, 2024

The amateurs running the Kamala Harris campaign have finally hit bottom. They tried dealing the “Trump is Crazy” card, the “Trump is Exhausted” card and the “Trump is a Threat to Democracy” card. But Harris’ poll numbers just kept sinking and Trump’s only kept getting stronger. The upward turn of fortune for Trump that has Democrats in a panic is not because he was shot or because he suddenly transformed himself into Mitt Romney 2.0 or Mister Rogers. It’s because the whole...

  • Opinion: Age discourse may need revival

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 29, 2024

Donald Trump’s public appearances follow a typical direction. He has a speech in mind he intends to deliver with the help of a teleprompter, but instead he resorts to rambling and discussing odd, bizarre thoughts about all sorts of topics. To put it bluntly, the former president has increasingly spouted rhetoric that is nonsensical and incoherent. MSNBC columnist Zeeshan Aleem convincingly stated that, “Trump has been embedded in the public consciousness as a rule-breaker for...

  • Opinion: Fair to worry about Trump response to loss

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 29, 2024

Here we are, on the cusp of one of the most consequential elections in American history, with the choices for president as different as night and day. Three big questions remain: Who will win the presidency? Which political party will win control of the U.S. Senate and House? And what will the losers do after the winners emerge? Polls and pundits tell us it’s too close to call in the presidential election. I expect Kamala Harris to win the overall popular vote, just as the Democratic candidate has in every presidential e...
