  • Greyhounds look to regroup

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Oct 29, 2019

PORTALES — On the bright side, Eastern New Mexico’s football team had three games left after Saturday’s disappointing 35-14 home loss in the Wagon Wheel game against West Texas A&M. Three chances to play sound football, three chances to put the WT defeat further and further into the past. It starts this Saturday, with a 5 p.m. road game in Odessa, Texas at UT Permian Basin. The Greyhounds carry a 5-3 overall record, 3-3 in the Lone Star Conference, into the game against the F...

  • Week 8 wrap: Wheel heads to WT

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Oct 29, 2019

PORTALES — Saturday, the wheels came off for the Eastern New Mexico University football team. Actually, it was the Wheel, as in Wagon Wheel. The rivalry trophy came off the slope behind the back end zone of Greyhound Stadium when the West Texas A&M football players ran up there and collected it after having just earned it with their 35-14 victory over Eastern. Saturday’s result boosted WT to 6-2 overall, 3-2 in the Lone Star Conference, while dropping ENMU to 5-3 overall, 3-3...

  • Cemeteries can help put our lives in perspective

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Oct 29, 2019

I’m weird, and I know it. But I sort of enjoy spending some time in cemeteries. I’m talking, of course, about the times when I want to be there, not the times when I have to be. Big difference. There’s been way too much of the latter recently, it seems to me. But I find cemeteries peaceful and interesting. Strolling among the tombstones (since I don’t have to mow around them, I much prefer the standing ones), I get the chance to play Sherlock Holmes and deduce all sorts o...

  • Taking owls as a good omen on trip

    Carrie Classon|Updated Oct 29, 2019

First, I noticed the owl. “Peter! Did you see the owl?” Our last Airbnb in Spain had a ceramic owl. So, when I found a similar owl — in a similarly inconvenient location — I took it as a good omen. “What owl?” my husband, Peter, said. Then I found four more owls, bringing our tally up to five. “Five owls. Now I know this is going to be a good trip.” “Huh,” Peter agreed. (Sometimes Peter’s not as effusive as I am.) We are staying in Frigiliana, a small town in the south of Spain. The rent was suspiciously cheap, b...

  • Sounding like a mom - don't vape

    Natalie Williams|Updated Oct 29, 2019

I don’t think vaping is good for the human. I saw a commercial the other day and it said that one JUUL pod has as much nicotine as four cigarettes. Other reports say JUUL has the equivalent amount of nicotine as one pack of cigarettes. Of course I don’t know if that’s true, but I kinda believe it. I know that kids will sometimes vape. I’m not telling anyone, but for people to vape who are not of legal age — it’s not good. I know I sound like a mom or something, but I was raised by parents that told me all of this. I lea...
