  • Opinion: Your vote makes a difference

    Kevin Wilson, Managing Editor|Updated Oct 29, 2018

A friend shared a column with me this week. I won’t give the writer or the publication publicity by specifying them, but the writer proudly stated why he’s never voted. It was a convoluted explanation that could be boiled down to, “It’s unlikely my vote will make a difference.” I’d disagree with him, and point him to plenty of times one vote would have mattered. A city commission race was decided by a game of high-card when each candidate got 67 votes. A different commission race was decided by one vote, and the losing cand...

  • Wildcats post fourth win over Carlsbad

Matthew Asher, Carlsbad Current Argus|Updated Oct 29, 2018

CARLSBAD — The first three times this season the Clovis Wildcats and Carlsbad Cavegirls met on the volleyball court, Clovis came away the victor. Playing the season series for the first time in Carlsbad on Tuesday, the results were the same with Clovis sweeping the Cavegirls, 25-21, 25-19, 25-20. The teams met in the Zia Classic and Moriarty Tournaments in September with Clovis (6-11, 2-2 5A-4) coming away with a pair of 3-1 victories. In both district matches, Clovis swept C...

  • In the driver's seat

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 27, 2018

PORTALES — Once Friday night in the Lone Star Conference had concluded, two absolutes were known for the women’s soccer postseason tournament: n West Texas A&M would be the top seed and host the semifinals and championship. n Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M-Commerce would face each other Wednesday in the first round’s 4-5 matchup. Thanks to a persistent attack and Charlotte Collins-Blaize, the Greyhounds are in the driver’s seat for who hosts that playoff opener. Collins... Full story

  • Ram defense bends, never breaks

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 27, 2018

PORTALES — Conventional football wisdom says keeping your defense on the field most of the game is bad — crossing the streams bad. Portales football wisdom says give the defense a lead, and trust it to handle the rest. It’s paying off for the Rams so far, with Friday’s 46-0 victory over Moriarty just another shovel on the mountain of evidence Portales is peaking as the season is reaching its end. Friday’s win, which put the Rams at 6-3 overall and 2-0 in District 3/4-4A pl...

  • Wildcats rested, ready to finish strong

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 27, 2018

CLOVIS — It’s probably fair to say the Clovis High football team has earned it. Getting nine games into the season without a bye week is a long time to wait for a break. But the Wildcats won’t complain. When they finally reached their bye, they went into it coming off a 47-0 rout of District 2/5-6A rival Eldorado. Having a Week 10 bye also gave the Wildcats extra days to prepare for their super-important regular-season finale against La Cueva this Friday at Leon Willi...

  • Steers keep rolling

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 27, 2018

FARWELL — It has become routine. A Friday-night Farwell football game, a Friday-night Farwell football victory. The Steers won their seventh straight this past Friday, routing Texas 2A Region I District 2 rival Plains 48-0 at Farwell High School. Their Labor Day weekend loss to Friona seems like eons ago. Farwell has been cruising along every since. But don’t tell head coach Danny Brittain. Though happy that his team has won seven in a row, Brittain looks at the Steers with concern, as a coach usually does. “I’m going t...

  • Chaps sneak past ENMU, win West

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 27, 2018

PORTALES — With a division title on the line, the Eastern New Mexico men’s soccer team got all of the chances it could ask for. Conner Dean and Lubbock Christian got a pair of free kicks, and did everything the Greyhounds could fear. Dean scored goals on both free kicks, and the visiting Chaps held on for a 2-1 victory Thursday to clinch the Heartland Conference’s West Division Thursday night at Greyhound Stadium. The Greyhounds were officially elminated from the six-t...

  • ENMU volleyball pulls split for week

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 27, 2018

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team heads into this week still not completely sure if it will finish the week with one of the Lone Star Conference’s eight tournament spots. However, the Greyhounds will be able to enter this week coming off of a win, which has eluded them during a late-season rough patch. The Greyhounds rallied from a one-set deficit twice Friday at Greyhound Arena, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville 23-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11. That...

  • Cross country: Clovis takes first at pre-district

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 27, 2018

CARLSBAD — In their final tune-up before the District 4-5A meet, both Clovis cross country teams fared well during this past Thursday’s Pre-District tri-meet at Carlsbad Lake, especially the boys. The Wildcats won their race with 25 points, followed by Hobbs with 31 and Carlsbad with 55. The Lady Wildcats took second with 40, behind Hobbs’ 20 and ahead of Carlsbad’s 51. Hobbs runners captured first in both varsity events, as Patrick Colborn won the boys race (15:29) and Mit...

  • Goddard tops Rams 4-0

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 27, 2018

PORTALES — The Portales Rams were hoping for a bright spot to end a season that went south late. Instead, they got a big dose of Gabriel Sanchez. After battling through a scoreless first half, Sanchez pulled through in a big way, scoring all of Goddard’s goals in the second half of a 4-0 victory Thursday at Portales High School. Sanchez’ big day came on an afternoon where the Rockets (10-8, 4-2) were simply trying to bolster what coach Fernando Sosa hopes is a playoff resum...

  • Prep volleyball: Texico streak hits six

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 27, 2018

PECOS — Texico’s volleyball team is rolling. The Lady Wolverines are on a six-game winning streak, and are still undefeated in District 7-2A. Their solid play is coming at just the right time. Postseason action is around the corner, and last year’s 3A state champs are trying to win it all in 2A this year. This past Thursday, the Lady Wolves continued their season-long climb as they swept district rival Pecos 3-0 — with scores of 25-15, 25-17, 25-20 — and improved to 4-0 in district competition. “We’re doing some good stuff,...

  • Prep volleyball: Rockets sweep Rams

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 27, 2018

PORTALES — Following a whirlwind career in high school and college athletics that took him from playing on Eastern New Mexico’s first men’s soccer team to a volleyball head coaching position at Sul Ross State, Dewayne Roberts figured he’d left it all behind and settled into an administrative job at New Mexico Military Institute. But like so many before him, Roberts found he missed the game more than he thought, and a position at Goddard with a talented roster was too temptin...

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 27, 2018

RICHARDSON, Texas — Both Eastern New Mexico basketball teams are predicted to finish one spot ahead of where they did last year in Lone Star Conference play, according to preseason polls released Wednesday by the conference. The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 27, 2018

RICHARDSON, Texas — The first three times Mercy Rotich ran a race this season, she was named the Lone Star Conference's female runner of the week the following week. Rotich and the LSC are nothing if not consistent. Following her win at last week's LSC Preview meet at West Texas A&M, the LSC presented her with her fourth award of the season. Rotich finished the 6K race in 21:48.65, giving her a lead of more than 90 seconds over second-place. The performance helped ENMU c...

  • Reporter's notebook: Chocolate carries the vote

    Updated Oct 27, 2018

Finally, a topic Democrats and Republicans can mostly agree on: Chocolate. KTQM radio moderator Grant McGee opened Tuesday’s political forum asking candidates’ opinions about chocolate. Curry County Clerk Annie Hogland said she buys three chocolate chip cookies each morning from a drive-through. State Rep. candidate Martin Zamora, R-Clovis, said he and his wife like to pair chocolate with a salty snack while on the road. Magistrate Judge candidate Nicole Roybal said “it makes everything better.” Incumbent Curry County...
