  • Cup holders best feature ever

    Audra Brown|Updated Oct 27, 2017

The important features of your daily mode of personal transportation are why we acquire it, what we brag most about, and what we miss the most when they are no longer available. We won’t talk about the little things that are tricky when we go vehicle shopping. Let’s focus on the best part, asking the most important questions. Which of the coolest things does it have that I need, want, and would like to try? And of course, how many of each one and where? Cup holders are imp...

  • Steeples still pointing us in the right direction

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Oct 27, 2017

Wow. I wonder how much farther that old sagging column supporting the corner of this old sagging house can lean out southward before the corner of the house just collapses and wordlessly pleads, “Help. I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up.” Nothing about that column is plumb, square, or level anymore, but I do notice some symmetry this morning. I’m writing my weekly column weakly, sitting beside a weak porch column, and displaying at least some weak faith that this will not be the...

  • Climb out of rut and follow God

    Judy Brandon|Updated Oct 27, 2017

At times I seem to get in a rut with everyday responsibilities. During those times, it feels like I am going nowhere and doing nothing. I think it happens at times to everyone. The truth is that God wants us to find joy and fulfillment in everyday life. A person may claim to have no talents and or abilities and therefore nothing to offer God. Yet, that mindset is detrimental. Dwight Moody, the great preacher, said years ago something that has stuck in my mind: “Real true f...

  • Water authority talks funds, applicants

    David Grieder|Updated Oct 27, 2017

GRADY — The Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority has a busy couple of months ahead, as it seeks both to secure state and federal funds and to select a new executive director from dozens of applicants. The authority is in a "holding pattern" regarding federal funds, consultant John Ryan said in a presentation Thursday afternoon at the ENMWUA regular meeting in Grady. More information on the amount of available funds for fiscal year 2018 and the remainder of FY17 will b...

  • District football could be on the line tonight for Rams

    Eric Murray|Updated Oct 27, 2017

PORTALES — The Rams football team will head to Moriarty tonight in a matchup that may ultimately be the de facto district championship game. The Pintos and Rams both enter Friday’s game at 7-1, with a 2-0 District 4-4A mark. Moriarty’s loss, 14-7 against Capital on Sept. 22, coming on what Portales coach Jaime Ramirez said was a “controversial call.” Portales certainly knows that feeling, following its 21-20 loss at St. Michael’s on a debated 2-point conversion call earlier in the year. Beyond running the same 3-3 defense...

  • Rams ready for playoffs

    Eric Murray|Updated Oct 27, 2017

PORTALES — After sneaking into the 1A-4A state playoffs by the skin of their teeth, the Portales Rams boys soccer team will play New Mexico Military Institute for an unprecedented third match in a row. The No. 9 Rams will once again travel to the No. 8 Colts — just like last Saturday's match, to face NMMI this Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., in the first round of the state championships. "The good thing is that even though we got to travel to them, we're not traveling four hou...

  • Crunch time for Clovis, Sandia football squads

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 27, 2017

CLOVIS — You don't need to be a math whiz to look at the numbers and understand how important tonight's game is for the Clovis High football team. The Wildcats and their opponent, Sandia, each head into Leon Williams Stadium with 4-4 records. But more importantly, they're each 0-2 against District 2-6A opponents. And it's almost November, meaning each team is desperate for a district win as the playoff chase intensifies. Gee, no pressure or anything. "Both teams are in the s...

The Staff of the News|Updated Oct 27, 2017

On this date ... 1987: Clovis firefighters were spending their spare time putting a pitched roof on the fire station, replacing what had been a series of leaky flat roofs. Fire Chief Floyd Cooper and his crew were providing all the necessary labor for the project using materials bought by the city, and saving local taxpayers as much as $25,000 in construction costs. Completion time was expected to be about a week, depending on the number of fire and ambulance calls the...

  • Regional football preview: Texico expects test

    Eric Murray|Updated Oct 27, 2017

PORTALES — Area teams will be put to the test against tough district opponents, as teams like Farwell and Muleshoe hope to keep their playoff hopes alive tonight, with just a handful of regular season games remaining Melrose and Bovina each had games originally scheduled for tonight, but in both cases, their opponents had to forfeit. Raton at Texico, 7 p.m. The Wolverines (1-7, 0-2) worked on a lot things during their bye week, and hope that progress can translate against a tough Raton (7-2, 2-1) team. The Tigers head into T...

CLOVIS — Police and firefighters rescued a woman who threatened suicide off the Prince Street overpass early Thursday afternoon, Fire Department Battalion Chief Dale Hand said. The unidentified woman was not injured, Hand said. He said a police officer climbed to her and secured her until fire rescue equipment was used to lift her to safety. PORTALES — Get ready to party like it’s 9999 BC. The atlatl event, held at the site six miles north of Portales at 508 NM 467, will allow modern man to try his hand at the ancient spear-throwing device. “Initially it started out of a desire to bring public and community events to the site and explore these...

  • Cold coming, but not to stay

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Oct 26, 2017

A freeze is coming to the eastern Plains, but don’t get too comfortable in those winter coats. The cold weather isn’t expected to last. The season’s first frost is expected this weekend — lows should be around 25 degrees early Saturday morning — but “it’s gonna be warming up Sunday,” according to Meteorologist Randall Hergert of the National Weather Service in Albuquerque. “We have lows of 34 and a high of 74 on Sunday, and then a little bit warmer still on Monday. We’ve got a low of 37 (on Monday).” Hergert added that anothe...
