Sloan got a couple things wrong Regarding Wendel Sloan’s column in Sunday’s paper: I think most of what he said is true. I don’t know about jerks or sociopaths, but I know a lot of Texans and not one of them think they are superior to anyone. There is no such thing as a “good Christian.” You are a believer in Christ or you are not. We all sin. Sloan said we don’t know why we are here. I know why I am here. I am here to love my fellow man and, yes, that is what the Bible says. Nadine Moore Portales This election crucial for...

  • Opinion: Don’t forget to bring some snacks

Local columnist Ever get a case of the munchies? Find yourself a few calories short in the long wait between regularly scheduled meals? No problem, right? Just bop down to the convenience store, the snack machine, or the nearest refrigerator. But what if you’re on the tractor in the middle of a farm, miles from the nearest refrigerator that still cools and contains anything other than a few parts that are better kept out of the weather. Bearings and their associated grease just aren’t that filling. In such cases, the very bes...

  • Faith: Consider the humble house fly

    Curtis Shelburne

Religion columnist Ponder, for a few moments, the humble house fly. Well, first of all, “Musca domestica Linnaeus,” the common house fly, maddeningly common, is anything but humble. Unbidden and with no introduction at all, it will enter your home, light on your person, fly up your nose, or into your ear. I was preaching last Sunday when, yea, verily, in my pulpit, a fly tried to light in my eye. It could have been worse. The act of preaching requires an open mouth, and the... Full story

  • AREA PREP FOOTBALL: Mustangs, Steers seeking district title

    Dave Wagner

Sports writer [email protected] At the least, it’s been a long time since Parmer County rivals Farwell and Bovina have played with a district title at stake. It’s not quite that this time, but it’s awfully close. The teams meet at 7:30 p.m. (CDT) today in Farwell, both standing 3-0 in District 3-2A Division II play. If Farwell wins, the Steers (7-1 overall) are guaranteed the district’s No. 1 seed in the upcoming playoffs; if Bovina prevails, the Mustangs (8-0) likely will have to beat Sudan (5-3, 2-1) at home next we...
