  • Regional preview: Texico facing do-or-die

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 26, 2018

As he took a break from supervising a light practice Monday at Texico High School, Wolverines head football coach Pat Crowley didn’t sugar-coat his team’s stakes for its upcoming home game against Clayton. The Wolves need a victory. Plain and simple. A state 2A playoff berth likely depends on it. And Texico surely wants one of those. “I believe this is a do-or-die game for us,” Crowley said. “Clayton has yet to win a football game; they’d like nothing better than to end our season. It’s a must-win; we’ve put ourselves in a...

  • Clovis suited boxing legend Romero just fine

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 25, 2018

Editor's note: This is the second in a two-part series of stories about locals set for induction Saturday into the New Mexico Boxing Hall of Fame. Sunday's edition of The News featured Brooks Byrd. CLOVIS — For Tony Romero, any challenges faced with gloved punches coming at him were nothing compared to making his way through the Ashau Valley while serving his country in the Vietnam War. He was a Marine. Marines are tough; they have to be with the missions they are asked to c...

  • Wildcats wrap up playoff spot with rally past Roswell

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 24, 2018

CLOVIS — It’s all about perspective. If Clovis High’s football team had won a game 6-3, it would’ve been a defensive struggle, a war of field goals. When the Clovis boys soccer team beat Roswell 6-3 on Tuesday night at Leon Williams Stadium, it was a high-scoring affair. Not that it started out that way, at least not for the ’Cats. Clovis was down 2-0 early and scored just one goal through the game’s first 38 minutes-and-change. But the Wildcats kicked the floodgates open in the second half and kicked open the state playo...

  • Opinion: Clovis High library busy place

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy, Columnist|Updated Oct 23, 2018

While one might not ordinarily think of a library as a hub of activity, keeping up with the activities at the Clovis High School Library and Media Center can be a challenge. Head Librarian Jenny Jeffery keeps things hopping. Several years, ago Jeffery received a CMS Education Foundation grant award and built the “Library Learning Commons” featuring comfy, contemporary modular furniture of varying heights and a long, high-seated “bar” with lots of electrical outlets for cha...

Candidate says his arrests are a plus EDGEWOOD — Candidate for Santa Fe County Commission in the southern District 3 area Rudy Nelson Garcia said that despite two DWI convictions and several arrests, he is staying in the race — and he contends the experiences make him a more qualified candidate. “There are some irresponsible things I’ve done in the past and my youth that no other elected official has that experience. I’ve been in jail. How many politicians have been in jail?” Garcia said. “It makes me a lot more accounta...

  • Young rescuers left with quite a fishing story

    Guadalupe County Communicator|Updated Oct 23, 2018

SANTA ROSA — Three Santa Rosa boys decided to go fishing on Oct. 5, since there was no school. Little did they know they would be helping fish a woman out of the pond, too. Joaquin Estupinan, Solomon Ross and Estevan Romero — all seventh-graders at Santa Rosa Middle School — met up at Park Lake about midday that Friday with their rods and reels. About the time Joaquin had caught the first fish of the afternoon, they heard a woman nearby crying for help. Anthony Salas, city dispatch supervisor who responded to the incid...

  • Probation violations put Clovis man back in jail

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 23, 2018

CLOVIS — For picking up new charges while on probation, a judge on Monday sentenced a Clovis man to serve the remaining years of his sentence in prison. Jared Wagner, 23, was on supervised probation since January for three cases from last year that involved drug possession and residential burglary. A news release from District Attorney Andrea Reeb said he violated probation in August “by picking up new charges of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm” for allegedly “beating and kicking another man about the head an...

  • Rams aim to stay hot

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 23, 2018

Portales football is on a hot streak. The Rams have won three in a row after a 2-3 start and have bowled over those three opponents by a combined score of 150-21, including last Friday’s 56-14 rout at Ruidoso in the District 3/4-4A opener for both teams. But there can be no letdown as Portales prepares for its second district game this Friday, a 7 p.m. home contest against Moriarty. The Rams want the top spot in district, a high playoff seed. So bagging this one is as i...

  • Hounds hope to keep turning corner

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 23, 2018

PORTALES — When the Eastern New Mexico football team brought the Wagon Wheel with them Saturday afternoon to Canyon, the traveling trophy was carried in the cargo department. After the Greyhounds retained possession of their wooden friend with a 28-0 victory over West Texas A&M, it got a seat with the players on a joyous return trip to Portales. But there was another passenger as the Greyhounds left Kimbrough Memorial Stadium: Optimism. It’s the optimism that the Gre...
