  • My turn: There's always next year

I like the end of baseball season. Not necessarily because it is over, but because of the World Series. Sometimes a team that starts off kind of slow can pick it up toward the end and next thing you know they are in the playoffs. Then with another win or two, they are in the World Series. That is the time that jerseys and hats come out to support that favorite team. If a guy, or a gal, really supports a favorite team, it is easy to tell. You can get jackets, T-shirts, hats, towels, flags and license plate covers, all showing... Full story

  • Report: Roosevelt County economy holding steady

    Alisa Boswell

According to the 2011 Roosevelt County Community Development Corporation annual report, Portales economy is holding steady, despite nationwide economically tough times, but the city still has a strong need for more growth in industry and population. “The big news is Portales is growing and it’s growing twice as fast as it did in the previous decade,” said RCCDC Executive Director Greg Fisher. “We grew at over 2 percent a year this last decade.” Roosevelt County added 1,838 residents since 2000, according to the 2010 Cens...

  • Resident hopes flags inspire, unify

    CNJ Staff

CNJ staff photo: Benna Sayyed Tony Heiman, left, admires the flag collection at 213 E. 11th St. that he and his longtime friend Paul Ulibarri began building six months ago. They hope the flags will help unify Clovis. Benna Sayyed Tony Heiman hopes the collection of flags flying in his front yard can inspire a sense of harmony and patriotism. It started with a single 17-foot flag pole the former welder fashioned from scrap metal he found near a trash bin to fly the American flag and has grown to include tributes to war...

  • Feds’ marijuana crackdown bad medicine

    Freedom Newspapers

In the design of America’s founders, the states are supposed to be centers of democratic experiment. They’re not supposed to be uniform. For example, even though alcohol Prohibition ended in 1933, local laws restricting sales exist in 33 states. In Arkansas, more than half of 75 counties prohibit alcohol sales. This design is why it is disturbing to us that the Obama administration has launched a crackdown on medical marijuana, which is legal in 16 states and the District of Columbia, the home of the federal government. Cal... Full story

  • Letters of the editor: Foreign aid should be first to go

It is interesting to read about the government’s solution to cutting the deficit — freeze government salaries, charge for Tricare, figure out ways to negatively impact the military, and even cut Saturday mail deliveries. I’ve never seen any proposals to cut foreign aid. We are sending $1.3 billion a year to Pakistan, the protectors of Osama Bin Laden, $498 million to Nigeria whose computer scams are known worldwide. Haiti gets $365 million without much to show for it. Zimbabwe, where white farmers are being kicked off...

  • 'Dale's Restaurant' in Melrose damaged by fire

    Kevin Wilson

CNJ staff photo: Kevin Wilson The interior of Melrose Tire, known to village residents as “Dale's Restaurant,” burned Sunday night in a fire. The fire has left residents without a daily restaurant, a place to fix flats or get diesel fuel. The giant white block letters on the red facade couldn’t be more direct. “Restaurant,” the building says to travelers on the east end of the village of Melrose. But Melrose Tire, affectionately called, “Dale’s Restaurant” by the village of 650, is out of commission after a Sun...

The giant white block letters on the red facade couldn’t be more direct. “Restaurant,” the building says to travelers on the east end of the village of Melrose. But Melrose Tire, affectionately called, “Dale’s Restaurant” by the village of 650, is out of commission after a Sunday night fire that leaves residents at a loss for what they’ll do without it until further notice. “It’s a meeting place, it’s kind of the life of the town,” said Robin Widner, who has lived in Melrose for 20 years. “It’s a hangout, especially for t... Full story
