  • GI Bill attracting quality recruits

Military recruiting commands report “some all-time highs” in the quality of recruits who enlisted in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. Acknowledging that the dismal job market is a factor, and that the Post-9/11 GI Bill is becoming a great tool to draw volunteers, the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps announced Tuesday they had met or exceeded their recruit targets at levels not seen since the Cold War ended. But recruit command leaders also struck a cautionary tone on challenges ahead as the economy improves, as bud... Full story

  • Elections exist for public’s benefit

    Kevin Wilson

I care about items in this year’s elections. And I’d benefit from many of the choices I’d make. Pat Sajak thinks that’s enough to keep some people out of the process. The game show host, posting at the Ricochet blog, made the argument against government employees voting last week. “In nearly all private and public endeavors,” Sajak wrote, “there are occasions in which it’s only fair and correct that a person or group be barred from participating because that party could directly and unevenly benefit from decisions made...

  • Enhanced high school concussion rules positive move

After a particularly bad weekend for head injuries on the football field, Monday’s announcement by Texas’ University Interscholastic League regarding head injuries seems reasonable. The UIL, which governs extracurricular activities at Texas public schools, announced that any athlete who suffers a head injury cannot return to the activity on the same day, and must be cleared by a licensed medical professional before taking part in the activity again. Previously, the league allowed coaches to reinstate a player who showed no... Full story

  • Their turn: Child abuse charge hypocritical of police

Kent McManigal of Farwell writes columns for the Albuquerque Libertarian Examiner. Here’s a snippet from a recent effort: Sometimes, The State’s actions seem like the setup for a joke. After a church service in Albuquerque, a man (who happens to be an ex-convict) stabbed a man who was approaching to greet him. Now, when I used to attend church, I will admit the “greeters” got on my nerves pretty bad a few times, but I was never seriously tempted to stab one. Obviously, the stabber was soon caught and charged with “aggrav...

  • My turn: Reporters have sick senses of humor

    Helena Rodriguez

The best Halloween costume party I went to was in 1998, hosted by a fellow newspaper reporter in Hobbs, who instructed us to come as a “news story.” After I describe the news stories we were, you may think we were sick-minded, overworked, underpaid, cynical journalists. You’re right. In our defense, I’ll compare us ambulance chasers to, well, how about ambulance drivers. In our profession, we resorted to humor, like others do, to cope with some not-so-humorous news stories. Otherwise “Meet the Press” would be “Meet the D... Full story
