    David Grieder|Updated Oct 16, 2017

CLOVIS — Across four town halls last month, members of the task force charged with developing Clovis’ Master Water Assurance plan fielded questions on nearly every aspect of their strategy to secure a sustainable local water supply beyond the coming decades. Those questions now have 20 pages of answers, provided by the Water Policy Strategic Planning Team’s chair and Clovis City Commissioner Ladona Clayton. The document is accessible from the city of Clovis website: www.cityofclovis.org or www.cityofclovis...

  • Officials get clear on water

    David Grieder|Updated Oct 16, 2017

Former Lt. Gov. says dairies, Southwest Cheese are not big water users. CLOVIS — Former New Mexico Lt. Gov. Walter Bradley wants to clear up the water situation: We’re not on the verge of running out, he says. Bradley, now a spokesman for the dairy industry, is speaking out against what he says is “misinformation” being spread about the region’s water future. “Let’s not leave the public thinking that the sky is falling and they’re going to run out of water in 10 years. That’s simply not true,” he said Thursday in a telep...

  • Boy Scouts: Sorry to see ya go

    Rob Langrell, Publisher|Updated Oct 16, 2017

We lost a great organization this week. What we’ve long known as the Boy Scouts of America is done. Kaput. Sayonara. Adios. Dead in the water. The group announced last week that, beginning next year, it will accept females into its ranks. It may be a progressive decision. It’s certainly one that’s unnecessary. Basically, it’s a whopper of a mistake. Once again, a private organization — which I remind you —can make its own rules and, within reason, do whatever it likes. That... Full story

  • I'm sorry... but there was a war?

    Kevin Wilson, Managing Editor|Updated Oct 15, 2017

Twas a great day in the kingdom of heaven. To people living on earth, it was December of the year 2017 AD, but there were no calendars in the Kingdom of God. But even without time, there’s still a such thing as a day of work. It was a particularly odd day for Peter the Gatekeeper when a, let’s say, recent departure from Earth came to his desk. “Good day, and welcome to the gates of Heaven. I’m Peter the Gatekeeper. What is your name and faith?” “Hello, Peter,” the man said. “I’m John Williams, and I am a Christian.” “Gree... Full story

The Lady 'Cats then went out and took care of the present, dispatching the Lady Demons 6-0 to return to the .500 mark overall while bagging their second District 2-6A victory. • Clovis volleyball team drops fifth straight

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 15, 2017

CLOVIS — When volleyball state tournament selection time rolls around in November, the Clovis Wildcats are somewhere between hopeful and optimistic they'll make the 12-team Class 6A field despite what has been a rough district season. The overarching thought: Competitive losses in District 2-6A, which currently has three of the 6A's top five teams, will mean more than wins in another district. It's some solace for the Wildcats, who took their fifth-straight loss Saturday as N...

  • Turnovers help ENMU beat Tarleton State

The Staff of the News|Updated Oct 15, 2017

STEPHENSVILLE, Texas — Turnovers will often help determine the outcome of football games, especially when teams take advantage of them. That was the case for Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday, as the Greyhounds parlayed three Tarleton State miscues into a 24-15 road victory at Tarleton’s Memorial Field. ENMU, as a result, improved to 6-1 overall, 5-1 in Lone Star Conference play. Aside from the turnover battle and Eastern outrushing Tarleton 323-22, Saturday’s numbers were fairly comparable. The Hounds narrowly won t...

  • Reunion fun enough to plan another

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Oct 14, 2017

It seems 40 years can pass in the blink of an eye or a lifetime or two can occur in the same time. So it seems after reflecting on my recent class reunion. The biggest difference this reunion over previous reunions is that I got involved in planning the event. I figured I had the time, I could volunteer for stuff that could be done earlier in the year and the reunion would be stress free. Not so fast. An unplanned trip to the ER and a hospital stay that extended to a couple of...

  • I qualify to be Republican mole

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Oct 14, 2017

It may seem incongruous, but I’m offering consulting services for Republican candidates. Since they already have corporate, Confederate, wealthy, gunslinger and Christian voters (African Methodist Episcopal Church members may be on the rail), I can help them attract more brown, black, snowflake and rainbow votes. According to The Associated Press, only one in five Americans support deporting young immigrants brought to the United States as children. According to the a...

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Oct 14, 2017

An Albuquerque doctor’s stunning revelation in long-running litigation over an experimental procedure in which bone cement was injected into the spines of dozens of patients at Gerald Champion Regional Hospital in Alamogordo is likely to upend the resolution of numerous malpractice lawsuits that ended up in bankruptcy court. The bombshell testimony of Dr. Robert Zuniga of the New Mexico Pain and Spine Institute appears to be a game-changer. He contends he warned an administrator affiliated with the hospital or its national m...
