    Eric Murray|Updated Oct 14, 2017

PORTALES — The Portales High boys and girls soccer teams were looking for some redemption against Hope Christian on Friday afternoon, after blowout losses in Albuquerque when they last faced off on Sept. 23. It was not in the cards for the Rams, as the boys team lost 4-1 while the girls fell to the Huskies 6-1. The Portales boys (7-7, 1-3) got off to a fast start, taking the early lead in the second minute. A Ram corner kick was headed in for the goal, but a Hope Christian h...

  • Manzano tops Clovis 34-10 on gridiron

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 14, 2017

CLOVIS — It doesn't count in the standings when you play tough against the top-ranked team in the state. If only. No, Clovis High's 34-10 home loss to Manzano Friday night was just that, plain and simple, and it was the Wildcats' third straight setback, dropping them to 3-4. But, the 'Cats did play tough in their first appearance at Leon Williams Stadium in nearly a month, much tougher than Friday's 24-point difference indicates. And they did so against an undefeated team, n...

On this date ... 1987: Justin Karrer, 9, of Clovis must have been grateful for the front page photograph of him that appeared in the Clovis News-Journal because it provided backup evidence that he really had grown a radish "that was a little more than he had bargained for." In the photo, the son of Paul and Patricia Lough was hunkered down holding a just-harvested radish larger than his head. He said the company had promised radishes as large as 5 pounds, but his tipped the...

  • Defensive stinginess carrying Ram football

    Eric Murray|Updated Oct 14, 2017

PORTALES — The Portales Rams (6-1) are poised for another 4A state title run, and they’re hoping their defense can continue to dominate like they have to this point. The 2017 Rams defense has shut out three-straight opponents for the first time since 1980 (and third time overall, including 1972). Portales’ three-straight shutouts have come in the past three weeks, heading into this week’s bye week. Thus far, the fierce Rams defense has given up just 70 points (10.0 per game) and have four total shutouts, including a 41-0 rout...

  • ENMU football squad eyes 5-1 conference mark

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 14, 2017

In the Lone Star Conference, the education doesn’t stop in the classroom. It’s moved right on to the football field. As Eastern New Mexico University heads east to face Tarleton State for a 1 p.m. Saturday kickoff, the situation is simple: You either learn the lesson, or you become the lesson. Being defending champ doesn’t mean you can’t get blown out. Texas A&M-Commerce found that out by falling behind 20-0 last week to Midwestern State. No lead is safe. Midwestern State found that out when it had to hang on for a 47-42 w...
