Clovis High linebacker Cade Wheeler (26) and Derrick Phillips hit Cibola quarterback Jonathan Mader, forcing him to lose control of the ball during Saturday’s game in Albuquerque. Mader was able to recover the fumble. (CNJ staff photo: Andy DeLisle) Luke Masters is big. Not Notorious B.I.G. big, but big. At 6-foot-6 and tipping the scales at 240 pounds, Masters towers over most of his Clovis teammates. Then there’s Blake Hicks, Masters’ counterpart at defensive end. At 6-1 and 185 pounds, Hicks’ main weapon is a burst o... Full story
Figuring her team needed a jolt earlier this season, Clovis Christian volleyball coach Cecil Boatman decided to switch up the Lady Eagles’ offense. She decided to move junior hitter Whitney Miller to setter, and the change proved fruitful Thursday night when Miller helped Clovis Christian to a 25-11, 25-20, 25-16 District 4-1A sweep of San Jon at the CCS gym. Miller recorded 11 digs, five aces and four kills as she positioned herself in all the right places at the right times. “I think that if we just keep our spirits up,...

Maj. Randolph Toris For most of you, Sunday will be just another date on the calendar, but for about 100 civilian employees at Cannon, that date has some extra significance and quite possibly, some angst. On this date, they will effectively fall under the National Security Personnel System (NSPS), a system originally designed for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Why the switch to the new personnel management system? In fiscal year 2002, President Bush released his President’s Management Agenda outlining 14 areas f...

Courtesy of Cannon Housing Office With the recent announcement that Cannon will be the home of the 16th Special Operations Wing, preparations to house the influx of Airman has begun. The Cannon housing privatization project was almost a done deal last year when the base was put on the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) list, said Michael Poston, 27th Civil Engineer Squadron. The BRAC announcement put the privatization project on hold until the outcome was certain for the base. With the recent 16th SOW bed down announcement,... Full story

After two days of Web voting, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Hank Baskett of Clovis has been chosen the National Football League’s Rookie of the Week. The other day one of my great-grandkids asked me, “Grandpa, tell me a ghost story!” Well, maybe when Halloween rolls around the last day of this month, I might do that. The story I must tell you now would make little kids scream and faint. The Wailing Woman is one of the fascinating, some say frustrating, folk tales of northern New Mexico and maybe now of eastern New Mexico. She sometimes screams as though in agony, at other times weeps forlornly or cries out in anger. Her cry is enough to send little feet flying. Wai... Full story
Even though pets are difficult, we still love them to death. My husband and I have three pets: two dogs and a cat. We have had our two pugs, Monty, a male, and Tiny, a female, since they were puppies. While they love us unconditionally, Tiny is a normal dog and Monty is our “problem child.” We have had grief and expenses associated with this dog since we brought him home. He started by biting our pants by the ankles. He chewed shoes, furniture and couch cushions, and ate garbage bags. After we had children, he loved to gra...
Anyone who can read this should consider themselves lucky — they survived yet another Friday the 13th. Not that I’m superstitious, knock wood, but certain things, like a full moon or the stray black cat that’s been circling my yard, just make me a little wary. This certainly applies for Friday the 13th. I even toyed with taking the day off, but I figured I’d be safer at work in a newspaper office than at home in my haunted farmhouse. Although we did have a bat in the office not too long ago. It hung blithely from the ceiling... Full story
If you’re looking for answers that have eluded mankind for a dozen millennia, find a bunch of kids. They have all the answers. I received a real-life list of these answers recently from my niece Whitney, a soon-to-be college graduate. (No gifts please; send money!) Here they are: How do you decide who to marry? •“You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff you do. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming.” (Alan, 10) •“No person really decides bef... Full story
The unsung heroes are numerous. They are not always the ones who commit heroic deeds, who rise to the crisis. The heroes on whom we focus this column are heroes who live, ongoing, in a way that will impact children. They include the science professor who volunteers as Scoutmaster with a very special group of Boy Scouts. There is the grandma who, though already coaching an elementary girls soccer team, heard that a team of small boys was going to have to disband for lack of a coach. You guessed it; she’s coaching two teams. H...
