  • Cowboys knew how to have fun at work

My mother was a teenager during the 1930s. That decade was one of the busiest for the cattle and sheep raisers in eastern Arizona and western New Mexico. In 1885, the railroad company built a spur line from Socorro to Magdalena. Livestock growers then had a market for their cattle and sheep. They drove their livestock from as far west as Springerville, Ariz., to the “trail’s end” at Magdalena, where they were loaded on the train and shipped to eastern markets. The driveway was about 125 miles long and varied from five to 10...

  • Official: Tres Amigas construction could begin early next year

Robin Fornoff If all goes as planned, construction could begin on the $1.5 billion Tres Amigas electrical power project near Clovis sometime in the first quarter of 2012. That’s what President and CEO Phillip Harris told a gathering of community leaders Wednesday. • Education column: Reading focus at La Casita

That deliciously crisp fall air means fall festivals and Halloween parties are in the works. • My turn: Monarch butterflies remind us of beauty in nature

Orange is a color that comes into its own this month: Glowing pumpkins, crisp leaves, dazzling marigolds, and for those of us lucky enough to live around here, fluttering butterflies — Monarchs to be precise — making their unlikely journey south for the winter. One October of my childhood, a number of the evergreen trees in our yard burst into a blaze of orange as a swarm (no, really, that’s their collective noun) of Monarch butterflies arrived to rest for the night. We spent a wide-eyed evening watching these fra...

The best cross country runner for the men’s team this year at Lubbock Christian University is former Clovis High standout Izzy Miranda. He’s also a guy who’s been known to wow onlookers with his soccer skills. But perhaps the highest tribute to the LCU junior has nothing to do with pure athletic prowess. Instead, it has t... Full story
