She was listed as Curry County’s 10th polio victim of the year. In August 1955, the Clovis News-Journal reported Ramona and a Tucumcari child had been flown to a hospital in Truth or Consequences for treatment. Ram...

  • Opinion: Bond C a sound investment for higher education

Guest columnists In the Nov. 8 General Election, Bond C is worth $131 million for higher education in New Mexico, with $13 million going to Curry and Roosevelt counties. Due to an expiring bond, we are pleased to say this statewide bond, if passed, will not result in a tax increase. Eastern New Mexico University would receive $11 million to renovate and improve the infrastructure of Golden Library, opened in 1952, and transition it into the Golden Student Success Center. Clovis Community College would receive $2 million for... Full story

  • Officials: Cuts have minimal local impact

Staff Writer [email protected] Local officials say they’ve let out a sigh of relief for the Clovis and Curry County governments now that the weeklong New Mexico special legislative session has ended. The Republican-led House of Representatives and Democrat-led Senate adjourned Thursday from the State Capitol in Santa Fe, passing a solvency package to Gov. Susana Martinez that is expected to add more than $320 million to the state’s estimated $600 million budget deficit, various reports show. The budget fix didn’t raise tax...

  • Wilson: Mendoza Line applies to cereal, life

    Kevin Wilson

As my Texas Rangers spent the early portion of the playoffs proving, baseball is a game of failure. Fail six times out of 10, you’re a Hall of Famer. Fail seven times and you’re an above-average hitter. Fail eight, and you’re a bowl of Waffle Crisp in my hands. Does this make no sense whatsoever? It shouldn’t, because it didn’t make sense to me during my Sunday grocery store run. During my trip to the grocery store, I had the same two goals I do every Sunday: Buy donuts, a... Full story

  • Sloan: Downed DJ owes livelihood to art

After getting pummeled in dominoes (as usual) last Sunday by residents in their 90s at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales, I met 41-year-old Lupe Vargas. In May, the graffiti artist fell on concrete from a 10-foot ladder while painting a raccoon-washing-clothes mural for an Amarillo laundromat. Busting his knees and feet, he will remain in Heartland — where his mother works — for six months. Wendel Sloan Vargas exemplifies the passions and dreams everyone has. Tak... Full story

  • Officials must get best deals, in state or not

State Auditor Tim Keller is going over state contracts worth more than $60,000 with a fine-toothed comb, looking for how much money goes to out-of-state businesses instead of to New Mexico companies. From a preliminary review, Keller estimates more than a half billion dollars is at stake and calls the practice one of the state’s “structural job killers.” While it’s a good idea to keep track of such transactions and inform the public about the results, it should be understood that just identifying where the money is going d...
