  • Seasons are changing in more ways than just one

    Karl Terry|Updated Sep 28, 2019

Once upon a time we had seasons of all sorts. These days things sorta just run together like melted Neapolitan ice cream dropped on a summer sidewalk. This past week as I set out to the store I asked the wife if she needed anything and she replied she really wanted a TV Guide magazine. I pointed out that she was actually holding a guide in her hand and if she pushed the left button a menu would appear on the screen. I guess she was feeling nostalgic for the days when the TV Gu...

  • Our people: Happiest behind the mic

    Updated Sep 28, 2019

Rick Keefer is a fixture in Clovis, though many people wouldn't know him by his face. Keefer, general manager of Zia Broadcasting in Clovis, has been on the air for decades at various stations. Though he spends much of his time behind the desk, he's happiest behind the microphone or on a motorcycle. Tell us about yourself in a few sentences: I've been a broadcaster my whole life. I was an Iowa farmer, and today love to inform and entertain listeners. My wife Margaret and I...

The approved plat is located in the northeast quarter at Section 31, west of North Prince Street, north of Walmart. According to Committee Chairman Marcus Smith, authorizing the plat will give the business owners in that area more leeway to organize how they want and pave the way for further development. The designated tract lines do not follow the current ownership lines and will be flexible for...

  • Officials discuss traffic on Sandia Drive

    David Grieder - Staff|Updated Sep 28, 2019

CLOVIS — The figures say one thing, the residents say something else. It will take some additional review before more action can come to a stretch of road in northwest Clovis. Officials in the city’s Public Works Committee meeting on Wednesday discussed traffic control on Sandia Drive, following reports of chronic speeding motorists from residents near the road’s 500 block. Traffic Superintendent Kevin Musick gave a detailed presentation on patterns at the 100 and 300 block of the road and said the average speed there is 22...

  • Curry to discuss tort claim against U.S. Air Force

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 28, 2019

CLOVIS — The Curry County Commission will discuss a tort claim against the U.S. Air Force that seeks $5 million in damages from PFOS/PFOA contamination during its Tuesday morning meeting. According to the claim, the use of firefighting foam has led to contamination of the groundwater, “causing the property to no longer be usable for dairies, for farming, for grazing or other agricultural purposes.” The loss in businesses and residents on that land, the claim said, will impact tax revenues to the county. Other items on the a...

  • Another viewpoint: Lottery board needed dressing down

    Updated Sep 28, 2019

We need Think New Mexico Executive Director Fred Nathan in the journalism business. He spanked the New Mexico Lottery Sept. 3 when he called out New Mexico Lottery Authority Board Chair Dan Salzwedel regarding the board’s recent decision to give Lottery CEO David Barden a 26 percent pay raise. Salzwedel told the Albuquerque Journal in a July 19 article that Barden’s new $220,000 salary was “below market, comparatively speaking,” according to the article. Nathan’s letter states, “Based on your statement, we presumed th...

  • The kids will be fine, even in a warming world

    Rich Lowry|Updated Sep 28, 2019

Greta Thunberg needs to get a grip. The celebrity teen climate activist addressed the United Nations and excoriated the assembled worthies for coming “to us young people for hope. How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.” Someone may have stolen her childhood, but the guilty parties can’t be found at Turtle Bay. A 16-year-old from Sweden, Thunberg thundered, “I should be back at school on the other side of the ocean,” which would hav...

  • Letter to the editor - Sept. 29

    Updated Sep 28, 2019

Feels like I have less time than I need I was going to title my letter “I don’t have time for this.” It was going to be about how time is speeding up, and not just for my generation. But for the sake of scientific accuracy, I guess I can’t say time itself is speeding up. So let us assume time is now as it always has been. My husband and I had time, 37 years ago, to make ice cream in a vat, and we had time left over to play cards. In between games, our friend, Roy, tried to help our baby dance with his little baby feet on the...

  • Congress, president stuck in past

    Michael Reagan|Updated Sep 28, 2019

I remember when every office in Congress had at least one calendar on the wall. That is either not the case now or, if they have calendars, no one is turning the pages. Democrats currently running Congress appear to be stuck in December 2016, wondering how Hillary lost and what they can do about getting rid of the winner. Grasping at straws doesn’t begin to define their desperate mindset and monomaniacal focus. First, it was maximizing the leaks and innuendo concerning the Mue...

  • Suicide doesn't have to overtake family's future

    Updated Sep 28, 2019

I never met my great-grandfather, although I’ve seen pictures of him. The one I treasure most is a family photo, similar to those images on an Ancestry.com commercial, where he is sitting with his wife and older daughters. (The sons would arrive later.) He’s wearing a hat and a solemn expression, but you get the impression that he’s content with the life he’d created since emigrating from Italy a few years before. You would be wrong, though. Some years after that photo was taken, this patriarch of five daughters and three s...

  • Oreos remain mainstay of my life

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 28, 2019

“Kevin, you look like you’ve been chewing.” I had some pretty dumb things said to me during high school, but this was one of the dumbest. Yes, the principal is clearly going to think I am a fan of chewing tobacco, which discolors your teeth, makes you spit black saliva, causes pain to your mouth and tastes kinda disgusting. Must be addictive if you do that. Nope, those black marks were from something less addictive, but still a mainstay in my life — the Oreo. Part of me wants to call it the chocolate sandwich cookie, as an ac...

  • Taxpayers are unsung heroes of economy

    Updated Sep 28, 2019

“The industry is investing in workforce development and programs, which will lead to better careers for our students and more jobs in New Mexico.” — Economic Development Secretary Alicia J. Keyes Consider it a case of the reviews not quite matching the script. Keyes is correct that college film programs can lead to jobs and careers. Go ahead and take it a step further — New Mexico is lucky to have a jobs program beyond government. But don’t let the “Give” in the “Give Back Program” fool you. The film and television industry i...

  • Teacher requirements changing

    Mathew Brock - Staff|Updated Sep 28, 2019

CLOVIS — Teachers for Clovis Municipal Schools will no longer need to obtain a master’s degree or face the prospect of losing their jobs following a decision at Tuesday’s board meeting. The board voted to omit Board Policy G-3600, which required level II and level III teachers to obtain a master’s degree by the end of their fifth annual employment contract to qualify for continued renewal. The district issued a press release on Friday stating that since 2008 the policy saw several revisions over the year, but was finally...

  • Regents near final design of residence

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 28, 2019

PORTALES — Designing a house can be difficult for a newlywed or even a long-married couple, between the discussions on materials, the floor layout and what rooms serve what purposes. But compromises are made because at the end of the day, the couple will have to live together in that house. Now imagine the process is done by a committee whose members aren’t sure what to compromise because they aren’t sure who’s going to live there. That process is about to come to an end at Eastern New Mexico University, with Regent Terry O...
