  • You might wait to turn wipers on

    Audra Brown|Updated Sep 29, 2017

Rain and fog and misty September mornings are more than welcome on the desert Plains. You won’t find me complaining about the moisture, but you might find me voicing some disappointment about the specific circumstances of my pickup’s windshield. A wet windshield isn’t too big of a problem if you are able to generally keep your glass relatively clean, but between the wet weather, there’s this odd tendency of dust and grit to accumulate. I can’t imagine where or why the sand...

  • Jesus sacrificed as scapegoat for us all

    Judy Brandon|Updated Sep 29, 2017

I read an interesting example this past week and the author was discussing politics. His point was that the government was the scapegoat for all the problems we have in society today. In other words, blame all our country’s ills on the government. I suppose he thought the government was the root of all society’s issues. We have all heard people use the word scapegoat. For example: “He was the scapegoat in that situation,” or “she made her friend the scapegoat.” Whether it...

  • Love people, be satisfied with your work

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Sep 29, 2017

Surely everyone who spent much time growing up in the western world in the 20th century knows a universal law that is almost as time-tested as the law of gravity. It is this: Thou shalt not throw out old National Geographic magazines. Doing so may not be illegal; it is just not something that civilized people of good upbringing would ever do. In fact, I can’t remember who I heard propounding this theory — maybe a leading scientist like Garrison Keillor — but I think it expla...

  • Wildcats facing similar Pirate squad

    Peter Stein|Updated Sep 29, 2017

CLOVIS — When the Clovis football team lines up against Cooper High in Lubbock, Texas tonight, the Wildcats might think they're looking in the mirror. Not as far as uniforms go, but with regard to mostly everything else. Cooper, like Clovis, is 3-1. Cooper, like Clovis, employs two quarterbacks — one more of a thrower, the other more of a runner. Cooper, like Clovis, has a dangerous rushing attack, led by a primary runner who's hard to stop. And even with all those off...

  • Texas-Permian Basin blanks ENMU men

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 29, 2017

ODESSA, Texas — Brandon Lee scored twice, including a goal just 14 minutes into the game, and the Falcons needed little else in posting a 4-0 win over Eastern New Mexico in Thursday night’s Heartland Conference matchup. Esai Cortez and Stefan Faria both had a pair of assists for the Falcons (3-4-1, 2-5 Heartland), who snapped a three-game conference skid. The win also ended a four-game winless streak, including the Falcons’ 2-2 tie against the University of the Southwest. The stats showed a more competitive game than the f...

  • Regional football preview: Dora faces tough task on road

    Zech Lucero|Updated Sep 29, 2017

CLOVIS — The 2017 football season has hit its midpoint. Some are looking to stay unbeaten, others are looking to break into the win column and everybody wants the W column to go up by one. Dora at Melrose, 7 p.m. With Dora (3-1) coming off of a 62-31 win over Gateway Christian last week, the Coyotes have a huge test in front of them this week as they head on the road to face undefeated Melrose. The three-time defending eight-man champion Buffs (4-0) are coming off of a 68-0 win over Magdalena last week. Dora coach Mason M...

  • Students sample mobile workout trailer

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 29, 2017

CLOVIS — When you think of the United States Army, fun and games is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. But that was the case at Clovis High School Sept. 22 when Staff Sgt. Damian Robinson brought a regional Army physical fitness trailer to the school. Students from the school's Air Force Junior ROTC and health classes at CHS took part in a series of games and circuit training exercises using the trailer, provided by Robinson and the Clovis Army recruiting c...

  • Pages past - Sept. 29

The Staff of the News|Updated Sep 29, 2017

On this date ... 1982: Rosli Hussein, a 22-year-old freshman at Eastern New Mexico University “just off the plane from Malaysia” was making a name for himself as the new placekicker for the Greyhound football team. Hussein, who had never even seen a football game before coming to the U.S., was on the national soccer team for his home country. In a visit with Wayne Gares, vice president for student affairs, Hussein was lamenting the fact that Eastern had no soccer team and said he was considering trying to transfer to a sch...

  • Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy, dies

Nardine Saad, Los Angeles Times|Updated Sep 29, 2017

Understanding Playboy-in-Chief Hugh Hefner's revered — and reviled — lifestyle was often just a question or two away. The iconoclastic publishing mogul, who died Wednesday at 91, was an open book when it came to his views on swinging ways and sexuality, particularly how his puritanical upbringing shaped his career and gave rise to the revolutionary Playboy empire. Over the years, the perennially pajama-clad Hef was interviewed often by the Los Angeles Times. Here's a sam...

  • Rams set for Socorro

    Eric Murray|Updated Sep 29, 2017

PORTALES — The Portales Rams will face an interesting challenge when they come back home to face the Socorro Warriors on Friday night. The Rams have not faced the Warriors since 2007, when Portales knocked off Socorro in the first round of the 3A playoffs. A lot has changed since then, as the Rams (4-1) have won two state titles and moved to 4A along the way. Most teams on Portales’ schedule are known commodities from previous years, which makes the Rams’ lack of familiarity with the Warriors a potentially daunting task. “Any...
