  • Residents concerned district plan would weaken community

    Kevin Wilson

Ahead of an upcoming redistricting vote by the Curry County Commission, residents of District 1 spoke out Thursday morning about a redistricting plan they felt would weaken their community and voice in electoral matters. The commission handled numerous tasks during a three-hour special meeting at the Clovis-Carver Public Library, but a majority of residents were there to speak out in a hearing about Plan F, a redistricting plan put together after other plans put forth by the Albuquerque-based Research and Polling firm. • My turn: Events connect community, Cannon Air Force Base

I had a good time watching my nephew jump around on the various bounce houses on the Cannon Air Force Base flight line Saturday during the base’s open house event. No matter what age someone is, I think they always get a kick out of exploring the insides of airplanes. The event was also a really nice way for the local communities to connect with military personnel. Another military event is happening this Saturday at the base housing in Portales. The Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce is holding an appreciation day for mili...

  • Leave loving memories

Oil painting has caused me to see the world differently. I find myself studying clouds and landscapes. I like to see the tumbled down houses and barns as we travel along the highway. I wonder what stories they could tell of days gone by. How did they live their lives? Did they leave their home with regrets or did they just walk off and leave it? Did they make every day count? Were words left unsaid? Were opportunities missed? I wonder how they were remembered. Every day you and I are leaving memories and those we leave...

    Kevin Wilson

With six weeks of minimal feedback, and an empty meeting room Thursday evening, Clovis city commissioners reached a conclusion that residents would be fine with whatever they did regarding redrawing city commission districts for the next decade. Six weeks after Research and Polling of Albuquerque presented the commission with four plans for new districts, the commission held a final study session prior to its upcoming vote on the plans. The vote is set for the commission’s next meeting, scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Thursday at the... Full story

People line up on either side and endorse candidates publically and those announcements are broadcast nationwide. Soon the networks will be bringing back the red and blue states map. With the national election next year, the news will be consumed by the candidates, what each said and what the l...

  • Military Mama: Kindergartener growing up too fast

I’ve stumbled into the joys of an attempted reader and star student. Kaleb is now one whole month into kindergarten and he proves to me each day that he is quite smart. Even smarter than I give him credit for, and I know he’s a smarty pants. He has known his letters and numbers for quite some time, yet suddenly each of those little symbols mean something. So each night he schools me as he recognizes more words. Sure, a lot of it is simply memorization. But honestly, that’s pretty much how everything is learned. Kaleb has a...
