  • A loved child makes a well-adjusted adult

    Joan Clayton

One of the highest compliments I have ever received was from an 8-year-old. She was one of my students from the year before. As I walked down the hall one day, I heard her say to her new teacher, "That's my teacher from last year. She loves me." I don't remember telling her verbally but somehow I must have had conveyed my love to her. Feeling unloved is the most serious threat to our children today. Runaways are plagued by feelings of rejection. Foster homes are crowded. Now more than ever we need to affirm our love for our... Full story

  • Animals sometimes road hazards

    Eric Butler CMi correspondent

Tony Bullocks: CNJ staff photo Horses drink from a trough Tuesday on Curry County Road 13. Why did the chicken cross the road? In communities surrounded by agriculture, maybe it's just to get back home after some sort of disruption. It doesn't happen too often, according to local officials, but eastern New Mexico is susceptible at times to something like a stray horse or cow wandering the streets. "Generally, it's because a storm comes in and spooks 'em, or a fence is knocked over — something like that," said Barry Allen, a... Full story

  • My Turn - Certain pastimes capture memories

    Alisa Boswell

I've openly admitted to all of Portales that I am a superhero comic book nerd and an old movies junky. It gets worse. I'm also a sci-fi and fantasy fan. All those shows the rest of you never gave the time of day because they were too cheesy to pay much mind, such as "Star Trek" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," yes, you guessed it; I'm a fan. Certain pastimes mean more to someone than just being entertainment. They recapture a part of your youth or a special memory that makes you smile when you need it the most. Having been...

  • Restitution could provide justice

    Kent McManigal

Recent and ongoing local events illustrate the folly of imprisonment. The situation is not unique. The same type of events repeat, in limited variation, all across America on a continuous basis. The Stanford Prison Experiment, and subsequent studies that keep confirming it, should demonstrate that you can't give one group of people dominion over another group of people without both groups losing their humanity. It's not healthy for anyone. Imprisonment also provides a...

  • Editorial: Can we please move to non-NFL referee topics?

    Clovis Media Inc

Pardon a moment of snarkiness, but let's remember that the Earth didn't move overnight Wednesday when the NFL referees and owners patched things up and ended their petulant little strike. Now can we get back to learning more specific details about what is sure to affect all Americans, like who has the right stuff to be our next president? For the last week or two the talking TV hairdos couldn't concentrate long enough to stop their whine over what call they thought was wrong or how the flow of a football game was hurt by...

  • Letter to the editor: Government regulation needed to protect markets

Recently when Ben Bernanke announced the Federal Reserve's position on the economy, the radical conservatives and Romney went ballistic. The approved conservative game plan is to do nothing that might give Obama credit, regardless of whether or not it is good for the country. The conservative policy to address our recession is tax cuts and eliminate environmental regulations that strangle the economy. Economists liberal and conservative agree that further tax cuts for the 1 percent will do nothing to help our economy and...

  • Rams, Lady Rams drop road outings

    CMI staff

ROSWELL — After finishing second in the state Class 1A-3A state tourament last season, Portales boys soccer coach Brian Kirchner tried to toughen up the Rams' schedule this season. So far, they're paying a price in the win-loss column, but Kirchner is hoping the experience pays off down the line. PHS played without two injured starters and another out for disciplinary reasons on Thursday, Kirchner said, and came up short in a 6-3 loss at Class 4A Roswell High. The Rams (4-6) face Class 5A Hobbs in a 1 p.m. home matchup on S...

  • Rams set for first true home game

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

While they were technically the "home" team once, the Portales Rams are looking forward to their first game at Greyhound Stadium tonight. The Rams (1-3) host the Dexter Demons (1-3) in a game which will also serve as Homecoming for PHS. Portales broke into the win column last week with a 48-28 win at Raton, and first-year coach Jaime Ramirez is hoping to build on the success. Turnovers have been the big bugaboo. "We're moving the ball a lot better the last couple of weeks," Ramirez said. "We moved the ball well against (Las...

  • Area experiencing positive economic signs

    Christina Calloway PNT Senior Writer

Roosevelt and Curry counties are thriving in areas of wage increases and employment in a state that remains one of the three poorest in the nation, according to a recent Census Bureau report. Sue Stockly, Eastern New Mexico University associate professor of economics, says New Mexico is a poverty-stricken state but she feels wage increases over the years and small drops of unemployment indicate things are getting better. "New Mexico is definitely doing worse but I don't think it would apply to our particular area because we'v... Full story
