    Judy Brandon

Judy Brandon: Religion columnist We do live in amazing times. Computer technology has given us new words like “travel drive,” “Wi-Fi” and “blog.” Think about the word blog. I read each week Beth Moore’s website blog and two or three other blogs. Funny though … five years ago, I would have thought blog was something that sounded like it belonged in the bayou. My computer really links me to the world. I can sit at home or in my office and tap into libraries far away, exp...

  • a view from under the pew: amos meets mrs mouses part two

amos the churchmouse: a view from under the pew Editor’s note: Last week, Amos, our churchmouse poet, agreed to be the test mouse for Willifred the white rat’s experimental tiny time machine. Willifred had installed his Tiny Time Traveler on Amos’ 1957 Cheeserolet motorized matchbox. Just as soon as Amos climbed in, he found himself in the Sinai wilderness confronted by a disgruntled Mrs. Mouses. For almost 40 years, her husband had been leading a group of grumbling mice-realites out of the land of Egyptian cats to a promised... Full story

  • Recession may be over, but effects still here

T echnically, the recession ended last year. So say experts who calculate such things. Most people probably didn’t notice. The national unemployment rate hovers at 9.6 percent. We imagine out-of-work Americans don’t feel a year removed from recession. Sales in many industries continue sluggish. In some industries, worse than sluggish. Those folks probably don’t feel as if the recession ended for them, either. But according to the National Bureau of Economic Research, a private panel and official arbiter of economic contr... Full story

  • Wasn’t crime to deliver retribution

Glenda Price Times were hard. In desperation, George decided to gather a herd of cattle and head west with them — to California. This was in the 1850s, and folks in Texas had heard talk that gold miners in California (the 49ers) were a great market for beef. George and his wife, Inez, had been married 16 years and they had 15 children — one each year. When George announced his plan Inez said she thought it was a wonderful idea, and helped him prepare to go in every way she could. Before long he had a herd...

  • Politicians extortionists at heart

    Tibor Machan

It may have been Will Rogers or Mark Twain. I cannot now recall which of the two great American humorists it was who said all politicians are criminals. But it makes no difference because when something is true, its source is not the main issue. Fact is, politicians are extortionists at heart. Their forte is they will allow you and me to live and work provided we fork out nearly half of what we earn or otherwise obtain honestly so they can then dispose of it as they see fit. In our time, the main appeal politicians hold out...
