Clovis freshman Antiesha Brown hits around the block of Roswell Goddard’s Laura Fry (10) and Jamie Edgett during Thursday’s match at Rock Staubus Gym. (CNJ staff photo: Tony Bullocks) Nobody celebrates a kill shot quite like Clovis’ Siobhan Flatow. But even her fist-pumping was noticeably muted after she hit one winner Thursday at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. Only about 20 minutes before, a Flatow-generated run had put Clovis (7-6) in position to gain control of the match and possibly hand Roswell Goddard its first loss of the sea...

  • Lessons can be learned from food scares

Just when New Mexico folks thought that burrito was safe, new news says a tainted bag of spinach found its way to the Land of Enchantment. The spinach E. coli scare has now strained its way to 23 states, killing one in Wisconsin. While the scare heavily hit California — since that’s where it originated — and nearby Oregon just because it’s nearby, it’s sad to hear of its migration to the High Plains. On a positive note, I don’t recall many New Mexico recipes containing spinach. Even the vegetarian burritos opt for much he...

  • Labeling system could be useful

    Bob Huber

Here at the Lazy Syntax Library we’re perusing a couple columns we wrote about terms used to describe groups of animals — you know, like a pride of lions and a gaggle of geese. The seed for this research was the behavior of news reporters in Washington, D.C., a few years back when they described animals in that city’s annual pet parade. Avoiding the correct terminology, they used such sentences as: • “They were followed by a batch of pet pigs.” • “On the float was a bunch of monkeys.” • “All that was missing was a mess of...

  • The little town that was — then wasn’t

    Don McAlavy

Gate City beat Vega, Texas, in basketball at Gate City on July 10, 1938. Gate City? Where in the world is Gate City? Think Conchas Dam. Yes, there is a Gate City and old folks around Tucumcari know where it was. I say was because there is no Gate City any more. When the workers started constructing Conchas Dam most of them started their own small city. Soon it was a thriving place and businesses began to open. There was a laundry, a restaurant, a school, a pool hall, a theater, hospital, grocery store and — believe it or n...

  • Southern control fleeting at times

If there is one thing that I learned living in the South, it’s that a Southern lady maintains control no matter how badly her children act. A few weeks ago I embarked on a trip to Rome with my children. I was determined to maintain Southern composure. Except that I am Italian, and Southern composure is the furthest thing from my genetically wired Mediterranean temper. The day of the trip arrived, and to my enormous surprise, checking in at the airport was relatively painless. The first flight was barely an hour long. A c... Full story
