  • Following God's lead will erase self-doubt

    Judy Brandon|Updated Sep 20, 2018

Have you ever had self-doubt? Sometimes I question my decisions. It may be something small like cooking spaghetti for supper and thinking I should have gone the roast route. Or it might be which purse to buy. Then when I finally buy the purse, I go home and think, “I should have gotten the green one instead of the black one.” My self-doubt doesn’t stop there. Self-doubt has caused me indecision about many things in life. I even have self-doubt when I know God has stirr...

  • Mother-in-law was a blessing and will be missed

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Sep 20, 2018

One of the sweetest and best ladies I’ve ever known, Vernell Cotten Nance, my mother-in-law, just passed away. Maybe this is a good time to reprise this column from August 2012: My mother-in-law has just moved from her apartment down and around the corner from our house, where she moved around five years ago, to assisted living in a community about 75 miles away. I don’t like it much. I know — we’ve all heard the jokes about mothers-in-law. And, yes, I’m afraid we’ve all...

  • Event to promote non-violence with pinwheels

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 20, 2018

CLOVIS — A simple design will carry a powerful message during the Pinwheels for Peace event today at the Clovis-Carver Public Library. Co-organizer Misty Bertrand said the international pinwheel project promoting non-violence has been in Clovis previously but wasn't here last year; so the Clovis/Curry County Chamber Ambassadors thought it was important to revive the event "especially with the way the world is today." The pinwheels — about 400 of them — were designed by members... Full story

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 20, 2018

CLOVIS — A fixture of the Clovis Community College commons area for more than three decades will be coming down this weekend due to safety concerns, according to college officials. A stained glass art piece created by former CCC art teacher Bruce DeFoor, which features New Mexico scenery, has hung in the second floor of the commons area near the bookstore since 1982. But when he inspected the piece over the summer, DeFoor said he recommended it be taken down. "There's n...

  • Second Street keeping police busy

    David Grieder|Updated Sep 20, 2018

CLOVIS — Officer, that's not my grenade. Gary Charley told police something to that effect this week when they located his recently stolen vehicle Tuesday morning off an alley near the 400 block of Clovis' Second Street. It was abandoned there less than 36 hours after he'd reported it missing early Monday morning from outside his place of work. When police located his Nissan sedan, they found what looked like a grenade inside and called out Cannon Air Force Base's Explosive O... Full story

  • Portales sweeps past Ruidoso

    Eric Murray|Updated Sep 20, 2018

PORTALES — It’s been tough sledding for Portales volleyball in 2018, as the team goes through a rebuild. However, the Rams got some relief on Thursday night, disposing off the winless Ruidoso Warriors in three sets, 25-14, 25-13 and 25-17. “I thought we served well and passed the ball good,” Rams senior Taylee Rippee said. “We’ve gotten better, but we just have to keep practicing hard and getting better to keep going.” It didn’t take much for the Rams (2-6) to get going agains...

  • Clovis takes on second in Texas trio

    Peter Stein|Updated Sep 20, 2018

CLOVIS — If the Clovis High football team is going to halt its losing streak at two and get back on the fun side of .500 tonight, defense — most specifically the defensive backfield — will likely be the biggest key. Clovis defenders should be plenty busy tonight at Leon Williams Stadium, however they fare. Because Lubbock Coronado’s 6-foot-2 sophomore quarterback Sawyer Robertson likes to put it up, be it a deep pass or the dump-off and slant varieties. Just look at the sta...
