  • In search of ponies: Deadly mission

    Sharna Johnson

Even as they make their way through the world, so narrow is their focus that it's unlikely they think of, or even notice much of what goes on around them. In fact, they're so preoccupied; it's no surprise when they walk calmly into traffic. Don't let their rangy, menacing appearance scare you — truth is their looks really have nothing to do with you and everything to do with function. Enduring excruciating heat, often without the relief of water, they make their way through ro...

  • McGee: The fire and brimstone funeral

    Grant McGee CMI columnist

One of the family was off to a recent funeral for a friend. As they were going out the door I said, "Now if the preacherman at the funeral starts hootin' and hollerin' that you're horrible for not believing like he does it's OK to leave the place." The door closed and I felt the gaze of The Lady of the House upon my personage. "What was that about?" she asked, looking over the top of her glasses. "Well let me tell you a story," I said. "I'm sure you will," said The Lady of the House. It was long ago and far away, the story...

  • Tarleton State 'big' test for Hounds

    Dave Wagner CMI staff writer

You might think playing two top-20 teams to start the season and coming away with a split would be OK for a lot of people. Not third-year Tarleton State coach Cary Fowler, whose team edged then-No. 4 Midwestern State 20-17 in its opener before losing to then-No. 20 Abilene Christian 34-31 in last week's Lone Star Conference Football Festival at Cowboys Stadium. "I want to win every game, and that's the way I approach it," he said. CMI correspondent: Joshua Lucero ENMU senior...

  • A fall for all

Christina Calloway and Alisa Boswell CMI staff

Forget the leaves changing color, in the Portales and Clovis area, you'll see screaming football fans cheering their teams to a win, longer shirts and pants to resist the cool breeze ,and farmers bringing in the harvest to signify fall is here. Alisa Boswell: Portales News-Tribune Roosevelt County farmer Rick Ledbetter picks red and green chile peppers from one of his crops off of New Mexico 236 Friday afternoon. Ledbetter said the cotton crops next door would be ready to... Full story

Capitalizing on two big plays, the Clovis Wildcats led Rio Rancho Cleveland 14-7 at halftime tonight. • Dora stays unbeaten with win at Amherst

AMHERST, Texas — The Dora Coyotes traveled across the state line on Thursday night and improved to 4-0 for the season with a 53-44 victory over the Amherst Bulldogs. The Coyotes (4-0) had been scheduled to play Animas at Hondo on Friday, but the Panthers dropped their program earlier this season. The game against the Bulldogs was added to take its place. Dora trailed 6-0 early, but was in front 14-6 at halftime and never relinquished the lead, although the Bulldogs (1-3) kept it interesting. Coyotes coach Mason McBee noted th... Full story

  • CCS pulls away in second half

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

The first half of Friday's Clovis Christian-Reserve football game was something you don't expect to see too often in 6-man — a good, old-fashioned defensive slugfest. That changed quickly when play resumed. Each team scored on its first play from scrimmage, and CCS added another TD on the third play after the next kickoff. The Eagles kept the Mountaineers in check the rest of the way, though, and cruised to a 32-10 victory at Jim Hill Field. CMI photo: Tony Bullocks Clovis C...

  • Lady Tigers flying high

    ERIC BUTLER CMI correspondent

ELIDA — When you've won consecutive state championships, expectations tend to be elevated when a third is in sight. But don't call it mad ambition when an Elida player, like senior setter Shealton Veo-Chenault, says something like the following: "We do talk about winning a third one, getting the triple crown, but actually our goal right now is to go undefeated — but I'd better knock on word when I say that." CMI photo: Tony Bullocks Elida freshman Marily Varela prepares to...
