  • Class of '57 reunites at Yam Theater

Childhood memories of popcorn, candy and movies echoed through the newly renovated Yam Theater in downtown Portales Saturday, as the Portales High School Class of 1957 gathered for its 53rd class reunion. Marcea Clive, one of several reunion coordinators said the theater, though not quite complete in its renovations, was the perfect location for the reunion because most of her class had heart strings tied to the theater. “Everyone talks about going to the Yam Theater when they were just kids in grade school...everybody has b...

  • T.V. losing its appeal to me

Karl Terry As we sat down to dinner one night this past week I couldn’t quite figure out what I was watching on TV. Some character was upstaging the star of “The Mentalist” with her psychic abilities. “Have they merged ‘The Mentalist’ with ‘The Medium,’ as a crime-solving super-duo kinda like Batman and Robin?” My wife assured me they hadn’t and that it wasn’t even a new fall episode of “The Mentalist.” I’ve never been much for prime time television, preferring old movies, hunting and fishing shows and old series like ... Full story

    Argen Duncan

Wesley Houston Lee was a quiet man who loved his children, grandchildren and agriculture and didn’t believe in quitting, his family said. Houston Lee, 74, of Floyd, died Sept. 12. Houston’s daughter Felecia Harvey said one of her favorite things to do was bring children to her parents’ farm during the harvest. Her father, a lifelong farmer, always had time to show them around, Felecia said. Houston’s favorite thing was giving his grandchildren their first ride on a tractor. “He loved what he did, and that was farming,... Full story

  • Blackwater Draw sacred ground for me

Clyde Davis This is to mention all of the people, by name, who gathered at Juanito’s on Thursday night to celebrate Don David’s birthday. Just kidding. Those are people who are perpetually concerned that their names will turn up in this column. The fact that Don David is now 35 is not the subject of this column. It rather concerns itself with the goal of a field trip that took place on Sept. 17. As part of a project-based unit on archeology, the middle school students visited Blackwater Draw and the affiliated museum. The... Full story

  • My turn: Compassion is real issue at hand

My basketball/golf/war-history buddy John Kirby recently asked whether I’d considered writing about the Florida preacher threatening to burn Korans. I told the Connecticut Yankee on the Court — who insists that I shoot three-pointers even when I’m not feeling it and thinks it unusual that I carry four fairway putters — that simple condemnation of the preacher would be like shooting fish in a barrel. And, I’m not licensed for hunting or fishing. The Portales resident also asked if I’d read Michelle Malkin... Full story
