  • Trek for Trash teams net 226 bags

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 18, 2017

CLOVIS — Tires and shoes and diapers, oh my! These are just some of the items participants in the annual Trek for Trash cleaned up off the streets of Clovis on Saturday. Seven teams combined to fill 226 trash bags and Clovis Community College defended its crown by finishing first for the fifth straight year. CCC collected 78 bags, winning a pot of gold (candy). The Trek for Trash offered Clovis residents with a fun way to spend their Saturday morning while cleaning up their c...

  • Wanted: Some good help in Clovis

    Rob Langrell, Publisher|Updated Sep 18, 2017

Finding good help nowadays is seemingly getting tougher and tougher. Now I’m certainly not saying that there aren’t good people out there. To the contrary: I know there are great potential employees out there who can help any business become better. It just seems like it’s getting more difficult to find them. I’ve had numerous conversations with current business owners and managers in the area in recent weeks, and the theme tends to be quite similar. They all have opening...

  • Gotta be a book in there somewhere

    David Stevens, Editor|Updated Sep 18, 2017

I’ve always wanted to write a book. I’ve written parts of several books, but never an entire book all by myself. I have some ideas: “Just Play Catch with Jay” I was a terrible athlete growing up. But I loved sports, especially baseball. I could easily fill a book with inspirational stories about my heroic, um, efforts at playing ball. I can’t remember if my Fireballs were playing the Ginners or the Motor Men, but I remember clearly the time I struck out the side as a little...

  • Reverse jinx works when it breaks right

    Kevin Wilson, Managing Editor|Updated Sep 18, 2017

I don’t want to say something, because I don’t want to jinx this. How many times have you heard that phrase? Maybe you’re making great time on a long drive. Perhaps your team just went up two points with 10 seconds to play. You don’t brag, because you know the jinx awaits. You know if you say something, you’ll come up on slow drivers that decide they’re taking every lane in front of you. You don’t brag, because Stephen Curry is on the other team and his shooting range just about covers a ZIP code. In 2011, when the Texas Ran...

  • Information can promote healing, increase awareness

The Eastern New Mexico News|Updated Sep 18, 2017

CLOVIS — On Friday, our newspaper published audio recordings of 911 calls placed to Clovis Police dispatchers during the horrific shootings at our city library on Aug. 28. As one might expect, those calls were emotional and haunting. Readers responded with myriad opinions, as they did with our decision to publish court records connected to the deadly shootings and arrest of 16-year-old Nathaniel Jouett weeks earlier. We have been praised, criticized and analyzed, which is appropriate. Some readers thanked us for doing our j...

  • Tough day for Portales soccer teams at St. Mike's

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2017

SANTA FE — Two red cards, playing the first half with only 10 players and the second half with only nine, plus a dominant St. Michael’s team led to a 5-1 loss for the Portales girls soccer team on Saturday at St. Michael’s High School. Portales head coach Ruben Tellez said via text that he planned to appeal the red cards to the New Mexico Activities Association. The first one came at the 36-minute mark of the first half, where Tellez said a Rams player slipped and touched the ball, which the referee ruled as intentional. The...

  • Midwestern improves to 6-0 with win over Greyhounds

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Sep 17, 2017

PORTALES — Midwestern State's men's soccer team is No. 8 in the country for plenty of reasons. They're most of the reasons the Greyhounds are now even in the Heartland Conference. The Mustangs handled business Saturday at Greyhound Stadium, holding the host Greyhounds to just one shot on goal in a 4-0 win to push their record to 6-0 on the year. Four different players scored for Midwestern State (6-0, 2-0 Heartland) and backup goalkeeper Richard Goss posted his third s...

  • Clovis boys finish second at Ron Singleton Invitational

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2017

CARLSBAD — Outside of 6A powerhouse Hobbs, there hasn’t been a team in New Mexico the Clovis High boys cross country team faced and came away with defeat. The same proved true of Texas teams, as Clovis had three of the top 12 runners in the Ron Singleton Invitational’s 62-runner field Saturday morning at Carlsbad. The Wildcats got a third-place finish from John Fuentes (17:21), seventh from Jose Salas (17:44) and 12th from Jerrick Maldonado (18:04) to finish in a comfortable second place with 55 points to Lovington’s 87. Hob...

  • Bell rings up decisive goal in Eastern women's first win

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2017

BETHANY, Oklahoma — Shelby Bell found the perfect time to score her first goal of the season, tapping in a rebound with five minutes left to give Eastern New Mexico its first win of the season, 3-2 over Southern Nazarene Saturday at Wes Harmon Field. Ariel Lopez and Naomi Abeyta scored first-half goals for the Greyhounds (1-3-2), who looked like they’d see yet one more overtime period when Brianna Evans notched her third goal of the year on a penalty kick with 24:24 remaining in the second half. ENMU had come into Sat...

  • Rams' Blakey going with NMSU

    Eric Murray|Updated Sep 17, 2017

PORTALES — Potential can be a scary word, but for those who possess a lot of it, the sky is the limit. Portales senior Lindsay Blakey has it on the volleyball court, and along with a coaching connection has landed a spot with Division I New Mexico State. Blakey verbally committed to the Aggies, who are coached by Mike Jordan — a friend of Portales coach Charity Gomez. "When Mike came down (to visit), he was like, 'Hey, I would like her to come to our Elite Camp at Sta...

  • College football: Lions maul ENMU

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2017

COMMERCE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Commerce footbALL team didn’t need long to show why they’re the class of the Lone Star Conference, but Luis Perez had gave Eastern New Mexico quite a reminder in the second quarter. With the host Lions already up 13-3 after one quarter, Perez unloaded for four of his five touchdown passes on the day, and Texas A&M-Commerce posted 445 yards of offense in a 51-22 blasting of the Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon at a packed Memorial Stadium. Darrion Landry caught seven passes for 112 yards for t...

  • Rams suffer first loss at St. Michael's

    Eric Murray|Updated Sep 17, 2017

SANTA FE — The old saying, "Football is a game of inches," could certainly apply to the Portales Rams on Saturday afternoon at St. Michael's. Unfortunately for the Rams, they came up just inches short at two crucial moments in the fourth quarter. The result: St. Michael's inched away with a 21-20 victory. After a Tyrese Dawson 5-yard touchdown run with 1:20 left in the game closed the gap to within a point, Dawson was slow to get up. He went down awkwardly as he was tackled i...

  • Portales' Cox commits to ENMU

    Eric Murray|Updated Sep 17, 2017

PORTALES — Size and strength matter in basketball. But Zamorye Cox proves heart does too. “I think a lot of it is you can’t control everything, but a lot of it is how hard you work,” Cox said. “If you give it your heart and give it your all, you can make a difference. You do have to work with your team and it is a team sport, but you can really make a difference, no matter what.” A mix of everything has helped the 5-foot-5 Portales senior land a shot at the next level, as Cox verbally committed to Eastern New Mexico Universit...

  • Locals give two cents on taxes

    David Grieder|Updated Sep 17, 2017

CLOVIS — One thing nearly as certain as death and taxes is a new effort, with each new presidential administration, to overhaul the existing tax code. The work so far of President Donald Trump is no exception, with details of a new tax framework from his administration and congressional Republicans reported to be released at the end of the month. Trump indicated in a recent bipartisan gathering that he desired a tax bill that would benefit the middle class and not give any extra gains to the wealthy, according to The New York...

  • Western states try to tame homegrown marijuana

    Christine Vestal, Stateline.org|Updated Sep 17, 2017

DENVER — Long before tourists started converging here to sample freshly legalized marijuana in the form of gummy bears and chocolate brownies, thousands of Coloradans were cultivating the medicinal plants for their own consumption and to share with ailing friends. Now that the Trump administration is pledging to closely monitor states where the federally outlawed substance has been legalized, regulators here, and in Oregon and Washington, are trying to tame what has proven to be an unruly crop of home growers. The biggest c...

  • Husband rises to fashion challenge

    Dnieka Hartsfield|Updated Sep 17, 2017

Would you let your significant other dress you for a week? That's what one woman did when she decided to do a styling experiment surrendering a week of outfits to her husband's whims. She said at first it sounded like torture, but credits his experience with a stylish mother and sisters for raising her confidence in the experiment. Also, she has been with her husband for 11 years so he has a pretty good idea of her taste in style. When shopping his wife's closet to find an...

  • Domenici was always for the people

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Sep 17, 2017

In a state where nearly every fiber of our political being has long been partisan, Pete Domenici stayed above it all. I always scratched my head at how such a legendary man, a man who spent 36 years in Washington, could have stayed so approachable and down-to-earth. He really did go to Washington to work for the regular man and woman and he never forgot them. More incredibly, in a time when Republicans never won statewide races in New Mexico, he literally creamed all takers wh...

  • Pages past - Sept. 17

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 17, 2017

On this date ... 1957: Mountain States Telephone Co. had a large advertisement in the Clovis News-Journal introducing the concept of “7 turns of the dial on every Clovis call.” All Clovis telephone numbers started with the letters “P” and “O,” followed by a five-digit phone number. “There’s an easy way to say and remember the new numbers,” the ad said. “For example, POrter 3-7665. If you were to give this number to the operator or repeat it to a friend, try breaking it up like this: POrter three — seven-six — six-five....

  • You know you're in Texas when...

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Sep 17, 2017

Random thoughts: I’ve been in Dallas recently helping extended family stretched a bit thin. After escorting a great-nephew to kindergarten and back several days, I am convinced teachers deserve huge raises. Simply lining the kids up was infinitely more difficult than herding cats. However, the kids could teach us about interacting. About 50 percent were black, 30 percent Hispanic and 20 percent white — but they seemed oblivious to who they playfully pushed. After school, I t...
