  • Laws to limit drone use waste of time

Clovis’ planning and zoning commissioners talked about drones last week. More specifically, they talked about whether they should try and control them. They can’t. And they should not. P&Z Commissioner Carolyn Spence said she’s heard complaints about the small, remotely controlled aircraft from area residents. One person told Spence he saw a drone take a picture of him while he was sitting on his porch. “We don’t have anything in place to address whether that is trespassing,” Spence said at a meeting on Wednesday....

  • Wilson: You can have a million dollars, but...

    Kevin Wilson

I want a million dollars. But my Powerball chances aren’t that good. And my chances of a lucrative career in journalism? Well, let’s see that Powerball ticket again. But there’s still imagination, or sometimes even a funny video. In a conversation I had with a friend, we discussed an awful scenario that we would both take if the end result were a million dollars. I won’t share the scenario, but we could buy soap and mouthwash and we’d still have a balance of $999,990....

  • Sloan: Taco truck idea food for thought

When Marco Gutierrez, a founder of Latinos for Trump, suggested Mexican immigrants could lead to taco trucks on every corner, voters salivated. My favorite meme showed Forrest Gump running down a highway toward a taco truck. Wendel Sloan Candidates could butter-up voters by expanding the taco-truck-on-every-corner concept. Inspired by Forrest Gump, politicians could offer pan-fried, stir-fried, deep-fried, sauteed, baked, boiled, broiled, barbecued, pineapple, coconut, beef,...

On this date ... 1961: An editorial published in the Clovis News-Journal told readers, “(W)e favor the abolition of taxation. “Our view is that the things government does, if they are valuable and of merit, will still be done by popular acclaim and therefore that they will be paid for even without taxation.” The headline on the editorial: Taxation is always immoral. 1946: Almost every Portales business had plans to close its doors for a city-wide cleanup planned the follo...

  • Boswell: Exploring the thing called rodeo

    Alisa Boswell

Love and support for your high school and college sports are always a big part of small town life. But unless you are involved in the lifestyle, rodeo probably doesn’t get the same level of attention as other sports do, such as football and baseball. Getting about three phone calls last week made me realize there are definitely locals who care about the rodeo life. A few people called me with concerns over whether we were covering the Eastern New Mexico University College D... Full story

  • Durham: New Mexico makes a great Texas

I knew I had to see “Hell or High Water” when I received an urgent text from an Austin, Texas, pal. “It is so good,” she wrote, “and part of it is filmed in Coleman!” Bill Durham First, you have to know what Coleman, Texas, means to me. Anybody who participated in the Muleshoe speech and drama program under the legendary Kerry Moore knows of his penchant for making up names of small-town athletic teams and swearing they are true. As we rolled through Coleman on the way to...

  • CHS CROSS COUNTRY: Cats place second at Carlsbad

Staff report CARLSBAD — Facing their stiffest competition of the season, Clovis High’s boys pulled off a second-place finish on Saturday in the Ron Singleton Invitational cross country meet. Granted, it was a distant second — the Wildcats finished with 78 points to 26 for defending Class 6A state champion Hobbs, which earned four of the top six spots in the meet. Kevin Wilson

The Eastern New Mexico football team ran up against the Lone Star Conference’s best on Saturday afternoon and when all was said and done, No. 7 Texas A&M-Commerce walked off the field with a 49-10 drumming of the Greyhounds. Physically outmatched at nearly every position, the Greyhounds (1-2, 1-1 LSC) struggled defensively to stop the Lions’ passing attack, giving up 378 yards and five scores through the air. • Portales splits with St. Michael’s

    Matthew Asher

STAFF WRITER [email protected] The Portales boys soccer team continued its undefeated run to start off the 2016 campaign with a 7-2 victory over the St. Michael’s Horsemen. While St. Michael’s (0-6) has yet to win a game this season, Portales didn’t make it easy as it spent all but three minutes of the match playing a man down after Jesus Lavalle was given a red card for grabbing a St. Michael’s striker when he had a clear path to the goalie.
