Clovis Music Festival enjoyable The Clovis Music Festival was greatly enjoyed by us. We were pleased the concerts were held in the Marshall Auditorium. The acoustics were great. We also appreciated the affordable ticket prices. Terry and Sue Potter Clovis Column, festival both a pleasure I was in Clovis, as I have been nearly every year, for the Norman and Vi Petty Music festival. • Faith: Reaching mighty hard for the one who made the stars

    Helena Rodriguez

Religion columnist I’m Helena Rodriguez and I’m a coffee drinker. As I confessed last week, I’m also an aspiring “early bird.” One age-ism which I can’t seem to embrace just yet, though, as my countdown to the half century mark begins, is talking about surgeries and illnesses. That’s going to take some reconstructive brain work on my part as I turn 49 in two months and still have a whole year to hit the half century mark and AARP’s mailing list. If possible, I will run and hide. I may further protest and return to drink...

  • Faith: Real love beats ‘tolerance’ any day

    Curtis Shelburne

Religion columnist Shhh! If in our society you are about to walk out your front door, it’s important to remember these days that you’re about to step into the temple of secularism. You must be very careful to be quiet and reverent lest you cause any stir in the temple and upset the worshipers in the midst of their devotions. It is rather striking how religious modern secularists are about their irreligion, how very “tolerant” they are of anything except “intole...

  • Faith: Make up your mind about Jesus

    Judy Brandon

Religion columnist John McArthur wrote: “Who do you say Jesus is? Your response to Him will determine not only your values and lifestyle, but your eternal destiny as well.” (McArthur, Grace to You https://www.gty.org/resources/Articles/2425, 2016) That is a telling question with a very specific answer. We each have to individually decide what Jesus means to us. Let me make my point with this true story. One semester in my early college years, I needed an English lit...

  • Opinion: School time was my ‘summer break’

Local columnist Summer is not a vacation when you live on a farm. Growing up, I didn’t go to school, but I had heard of this mysterious thing known as summer break. Despite a couple of obvious interpretations, it was clear that this term was intended to denote some sort of reprieve, rather than what sort of plow you would be using. Eventually, I began college, my first experience with the semester system of scheduling — and low and behold, I thought it would be my chance to understand that great vacation I’d heard of known... Full story

  • Faith: Church celebrating 75th anniversary

Staff photo: Brooke Finch Ervin Stidham, left, discusses the upcoming 75th anniversary of Prince Street Baptist Church with Pastor Tommy Hohstadt. Staff Writer [email protected] Ervin Stidham hasn’t attended his church in a year, but he’s still considered by its staff to be one of the congregation’s most active members. Stidham, turning 90 years old in October, relies on a walker to get around his Portales home and weekly phone calls with his pastor to stay involved in hi... Full story

  • Woman facing arson charges set for October pretrial conference

    Kevin Wilson

Managing Editor [email protected] A Clovis woman facing multiple arson charges had a status conference Thursday, following a judge’s concern there had been no movement on some charges. Angie Madrid, 41, will be back in court at 9 a.m. Oct. 13 for pretrial conference and possibly a hearing to reconsider conditions of release. • No funnel cloud after Wednesday night tornado warning

Staff Writer [email protected] In the wake of storms that rumbled through the area Wednesday night into Thursday morning, much of Clovis woke up to find they had slept through a tornado warning. • McManigal: Liberty, anarchy go hand in hand

What’s the difference between a libertarian and an anarchist? Libertarians advocate liberty. Specifically, maximum liberty and minimum government, because the two are inversely related. The more of one you have, the less you have of the other. What’s the minimum level of government you can impose on others? Kent McManigal “That government is best which governs least,” wrote Henry David Thoreau. The best government is zero government. In the Tao Te Ching, written around... Full story
