Jensen Farms, of Holly, Colo., is voluntarily recalling their shipments of Rocky Ford whole cantaloupe because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria. The company is working with the State of Colorado and the Federal Food & Drug Administration to inform consumers of this recall. L. monocytogenes is a bacterium that can contaminate foods and cause a mild non-invasive illness (called listerial gastroenteritis) or a severe, sometimes life-threatening, illness (called invasive listeriosis). Persons who have the...
Last weekend America observed the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Apparently few Americans have learned anything in the past 10 years. At least, that is the lesson I take away from what I saw of the commemorations. If the terrorists hate us for our freedom, they must love us now. The U.S. government has canceled freedom and only allows us to exercise certain privileges, at their discretion and within “sensible” limits, in place of freedom now. The only part of the Bill of Rights that isn’t... Full story
A Big Brother bill quietly moving through the House of Representatives would effectively end Americans’ online privacy. H.R.1981, the Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011, would force Internet service providers to maintain a national database of every user’s name, address, phone number, credit card information, bank account numbers and IP address. “The records would involve all Internet users everywhere, and they would be available to law enforcement for any purpose,” a coalition of 30 privacy... Victor Contreras, chairman of political committee of Hispanos Unidos, submitted this view repealing driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants in New Mexico. Hispanos Unidos is a non-partisan political action committee dedicated to election reform and fighting corruption in New Mexico. As a country of rule by law, we need to live by the rules of our nation and issuing legal identification to undocumented immigrants no longer makes sense. Instead of reducing uninsured motorists, New Mexico has become a beacon for those... Full story

Years ago (after the 1950s drought broke him) my father had a business helping other ranchers get rid of invasive saguaro cactus. It was set up so the government helped with the cost, although I don’t know the details. He had two tractors and other equipment. They dug the plants up. Since the government was involved, a government fellow accompanied Dad as he analyzed one particular ranch. Dad came up with a per/acre count of cactus plants, and based his fee on that. A couple of months later, the count and fee for that ranch...
I love this time of year. Fall is the time when God takes his master paintbrush and tips the foliage with gorgeous hues of red and orange with golden streaks of beauty. My friend says, “God spilled his paint bucket.” The crispness of the early morning and the chill at dusk invigorates me. The smell of wood burning in a fireplace, a good book and an apple makes me happy. The beauty of cottonwood leaves wear golden crowns looking up to heaven. Ornamental pear trees grace the landscape with deep scarlet leaves. Farmers...
United Way of Eastern New Mexico figures there’s plenty of need in Curry and Roosevelt counties, and they’re thinking six figures might be what it takes to provide for it. The charitable organization is in the first stages of its annual fundraising campaign. This year’s goal: $1 million. That’s almost twice the charity’s 2010 haul of $522,599, but, “We know we’re capable of it,” said campaign chairman Thom Moore. “We’ve got 24,000 employed folks in the Clovis/Portales area,” Moore continued. “Of those...

Roosevelt County Commissioners have approved a redistricting plan that splits Precinct 12 in half to balance District 1 and 2 populations in the county. The county’s consultant, Research & Polling Project Manager Brad Morrison, said the change approved Sept. 6 does will not affect commissioners in the next election. Precinct 12 was split at the intersection of East Seventh Street and South Chicago Avenue. “If we were to try to put the whole population of Precinct 12 into District 1, it would have been overpopulated,...
My new regular daily pastime now consists of learning a little bit more every day about how to run a newsroom. I’m sure for anyone else watching or for veteran journalists, it would probably be entertaining and somewhat amusing to watch, and as for me, it would definitely fall into the category of adventure, which I suppose is entertainment in a sense. I have to admit though that reaching an entirely new level of learning in my job has been beneficial and it is fun to know I’m even more capable than I had previously... Full story
Staff and wire reports DENVER — A melon farm in Colorado has issued a recall of cantaloupe following a Listeria outbreak that has killed at least two people, sickened 22 and spread to several states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the deaths from the outbreak were reported in Colorado and New Mexico, and state health departments said more deaths could be confirmed once testing comes back. The CDC said the 22 people infected are in seven states: Colorado, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma,...
Staff and wire reports New Mexico is seeing some late summer rainfall, but weather forecasters say it hasn’t been enough to make up for a year of drought. Wednesday night’s downpour resulted in .68 inches of rain for Clovis, said Mark Fettig, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Albuquerque. But the bad news is that rain accounts for more than 10 percent of Clovis’ total 2011 rainfall of 5.98 inches, and it doesn’t change the fact that the area is less than halfway to what would be considered normal rai...

Freedom New Mexico Curry County Commissioners on Thursday approved new property tax rates for 2011 that should mean no increases or only slight increases to most property owners, according to County Assessor Tim Lyman. Lyman said the new rates do include an increase to some Melrose property owners of about 4 mils. That increase to fund a school bond issue approved by voters in the November general election. The new tax rates were approved on a 4-0 vote with Commissioner Dan Stoddard attending the meeting via teleconference,...

Courtesy photo Enrique Deleon Benna Sayyed Clovis police responding to a double homicide Tuesday night said they found the brother of one of the victims kneeling over the accused killer “beating him in the head with his fists,” according to court documents released Thursday. The documents, affidavits filed requesting arrest warrants, detail the scene at 1004 1/2 Prince Street, the home of Joe Valero, 44, and Lupita Casteneda, 25. Police said Valero was dead at the scene and Casteneda died a few hours later at a Lubbock... Full story
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team was tantalizingly close to a rare Lone Star Conference road win on Thursday, but the Zias just couldn’t finish the deal. Tarleton State rallied from a five-point deficit in the second game, then closed out the match with eight of the final nine points in the fourth set to claim a 17-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 win over ENMU. The Zias (2-9, 1-4 LSC) have lost 37 of their last 38 conference road outings, going back nearly six years. The lone win was a...
