Jenna Sievers scored twice and added an assist Friday and Clovis beat West Mesa 4-1win in the first game of a two-day road trip to Albuquerque. "We tried really hard to control the middle," Clovis coach Traci Sievers said. "We did a good job of making passes through the middle." Sievers scored 17 minutes into the match on a breakaway when she chased down a punt from Clovis goalkeeper Michala Ingram behind the West Mesa defense. The senior forward scored the game's final goal when she hammered home a pass from Daisa Hastings...

  • CCS shows improvement in second matchup with NMSD

Two things were clear Friday night at Jim Hill Field. First, Clovis Christian is a much better team than when the season started. Second, New Mexico School for the Deaf is still the better team. Two weeks after delivering a 55-0 defeat to the Eagles at home, the visiting Roadrunners faced a tougher challenge in the rematch, but still finished with a comfortable 56-6 win. • Clovis expects challenge this week

    Kevin Wilson CNJ staff writer

Saturday afternoon at F.M. Wilson Stadium will feature a team in purple, white and black facing a team in white, purple and black. While that may seem like a simplistic description of the 2 p.m. tilt between Manzano and Clovis, there's no denying the teams are somewhat looking at themselves in the mirror. Both teams are going from a running quarterback to a throwing quarterback. Both teams are senior-laden in the trenches, and young and athletic at the skill and secondary... Full story

Saturday afternoon at F.M. Wilson Stadium will feature a team in purple, white and black facing a team in white, black and purple. While that may seem like a simplistic description of the 2 p.m. tilt between Manzano and Clovis, there's no denying the teams are somewhat looking at themselves in the mirror. Both teams are going from a running quarterback to a throwing quarterback. Both teams are senior-landed in the trenches, and young and athletic at the skill and secondary positions. And both teams know their first two games...

  • Round and round they go

    Eric Butler CMI correspondent

To an outsider, the world of roller derby may seem akin to something like wrestling on wheels. Or, in images from movies such as "Rollerball," something worse. But for a couple of dozen women in Clovis and Portales, roller derby is an adrenaline rush and a physical workout that can hardly be beat by many other activities. That's how Crystal Johnson, 31, got started in the sport when she was stationed in Alexandria, Va. Just coming off a pregnancy, Johnson was seeking a... Full story

  • McGee: It just cost a dollar

    Grant McGee CMI columnist

It's been a pretty good "Yard Sale-ing Season." It's something The Lady of the House and I like to do; rise and shine early on a Saturday and hit the streets looking for nifty stuff. What is nifty stuff? We don't know, we just know it when we see it. For instance, I couldn't say no to a videotape player for one dollar. Yes, we still watch videotapes. There's a wide selection of them out there and they're cheap. This VHS machine was truly nifty stuff. It's ancient, it was a dollar and the woman hosting the yard sale assured... Full story
