• What is a Negotiated Service Agreement? It is a customer-specific contract authorized by law between the Postal Service and a mailing customer. USPS can enter into NSAs after a review by the Postal Regulatory Commission if the proposal would improve USPS' finances or mail operations, but not cause unreasonable harm to the marketplace. • How many of these NSAs does the Postal Service have? In its competitive side — where it is largely deregulated to compete for such business as parcel shipping — it has dozens. In its "ma...
An editorial from the National Newspaper Association: The newspaper business — both small and large papers — has sounded full-throated opposition this past month about a plan by the U.S. Postal Service to purposely entice advertising out of the newspaper so ads can be placed instead with USPS favored stakeholder Valassis Inc., which bought direct mail company ADVO in 2006. The goal of USPS is to create more advertising mail. To newspapers that count on advertising to pay its reporters and cover the news, this new venture is...
Rick Reilly did a great piece this past week on Gerry Sandusky. No, not that Jerry Sandusky, which is kind of the whole point of the news piece, which I highly recommend you catch on ESPN's website. There's a Baltimore broadcaster named Gerry Sandusky, who constantly gets hate mail and second looks from people who think he's Jerry Sandusky, who was convicted of 45 counts of child sex abuse. Gerry Sandusky noted that he wasn't a victim, like the abused children and their families. He was inconvenienced, and it was a huge... Full story

Portales News-Tribune Circulation Director Robert Arrowsmith writes a blog at: walkthisway. cnjonlinehosting.com/ Here's his post from Tuesday: There is not much that fazes me. It takes quite a bit to shock me, to make the heart skip a beat anymore. The tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, surprised me. It stunned me, and it shocked me to see it played out live on television. For a time there I had no idea what was going on in the world around me. It did not help that everyone in my household became violently ill within 24 hours,...

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has proposed opening military TRICARE networks of civilian health care providers to veterans who can't get timely mental health care from the Department of Veterans Affairs. TRICARE networks currently exist to provide health care to military personnel and retirees, their families and survivors. Two days after Romney's pledge, President Obama signed an executive order with several new initiatives to improve access to mental health care services for veterans, service members and their...
The University of New Mexico Cancer Center is adding a new tool to its kit to diagnose and fight cancer. This fall the center will be among the first of a small number of sites worldwide to acquire a technology that can sequence an entire human genome in half a day for about $1,000. Whole genome sequencing now costs UNM about $10,000 per patient and takes an out-of-state company at least two weeks. To get a sense of how much of a giant leap forward this is, consider that the human genome consists of about 3 billion DNA rungs...
I was quite the pig Saturday jumping and running in mud. I participated in the Dirty Dash, a 3.5 mile mud run near Albuquerque. I had been running daily leading up to the event. I kind of felt like I threw that all away by staying out late Friday night but I sprung into action Saturday morning. I put on my team shirt that read "Muddy Buddies" in neon duck tape colors across the front, my neon shorts and I laced my shoes because it was go time. I wasn't fazed by the tutus, bunny suits and other costumes or the obvious... Full story
