Friends who live in the town three miles from where you just broke down are really hard to replace. This story starts with a car that lived in the dead center of Fort Worth. Find a map, look just below and between the words “Fort” and “Worth.” You’ll see two lane-happy interstates that intersect in a mess that looks like it’d take more... Full story

  • Reality, history rarely clear-cut and tidy

    Curtis Shelburne

I’ve tried to resist writing this column. Maybe not hard enough. May I say early on ... First, reality in general and history in particular, are rarely as simple, clear-cut and tidy as many folks would like to think. Second, the winners of wars get to write most of the history. Third, just because the majority of the mainstream news media and other purveyors of political correctness believe something passionately does not even usually make it true. The recent Confederate f...

  • Bible has all the answers about God

    Judy Brandon

Religion columnist Great philosophers have focused on the concept of God throughout the centuries. Many have philosophized about God the Creator of the universe, but some have just noted a “god” or “gods.” At times they have tried to define man’s purpose and our place in the universe. Through the centuries, there have been questions: Who is God? Who is man? David Platt, well known author and preacher, wrote something that summed this up beautifully with a telling statement...

  • McManigal: Kentucky clerk's morals fall flat

Everyone seems to have an opinion about the Kentucky county clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. First of all it needs to be understood that everyone has a right to live by their faith, but no one has a right to a government job — a right that can’t exist. If a job would require you to do things you believe are wrong, don’t take the job. If you hold a job and the requirements change so you would be asked to do things you believe are wrong... Full story

  • Inmate drugs need better regulation

Getting high while in the clink apparently isn’t so difficult in New Mexico. And not just from illegal drugs smuggled into the prisons. The rate of prescribed heavy-duty psychotropic drugs to inmates in state prison is rising, quite significantly. And while there are mentally ill inmates who need these meds prescribed for depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other conditions, and being incarcerated definitely can be depressing, that doesn’t mean all these inmates are mentally ill or need psychotropic drugs to cop...
