  • Our nation must continue to persevere

Freedom New Mexico In the hours after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, the story of four of the passengers of hijacked Flight 93, which crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside, captured the interest of Americans and their supporters around the world. Todd Beamer, Mark Bingham, Jeremy Glick and Tom Burnett, after learning through cell phone communications that terrorists had taken down the World Trade Center towers, decided to fight back. The four men used a food cart to ram their way into the...

  • Bin Laden’s support also dead

On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, I have no guilt in celebrating “Osama bin Laden Got What He Deserved Day.” Even in the Muslim world, his support had fallen precipitously. According to the Pew Research Center, in the Palestinian Territories his support had fallen from 72 percent in 2003 to 34 percent in 2011; in Indonesia from 59 to 26 percent; in Jordan from 56 to 13 percent; and in Lebanon from 19 to one percent. Middle East grievances with the West stem partly from World War I when the British Empire penned the Bal...

U.S. Catholic bishops are calling on their fellow Americans to see the tenth anniversary of 9/11 as a time to remember the sacrifices, to face today’s challenges together, and to renew our nation and world. The bishops’ message was outlined in a statement from Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: “We reverently recall those who were most directly affected by this tragedy — those who died, were injured or lost loved ones,” Archbishop Dolan said. “We res... Full story

  • Family remembers son who died in attacks

    Kevin Wilson

A decade after they lost a son and brother, the Milam family still finds things out about Maj. Ron Milam. And no matter how many years pass, their lives will never be the same. Killed Sept. 11, 2001, when a hijacked jet slammed into the Pentagon, Ron Milam continues to inspire memories from Muskogee, Okla., to Washington, D.C., and push those that knew him to be better leaders and better people. “His mindset was ‘do what you’ve got to do and get it done,’” said younger brother Steve. “Even though he went to the military an...

  • Fine line divides types of martyrs

There is a fine line that divides things that seem alike. A line, however thin, is still a line. It exists to define and make clear truths that would otherwise be missed. Usually, we know the line is there; and, usually, we understand what it defines. But sometimes we are fooled by the similarity of things and fail to discern the line that separates them. Today marks the 10th anniversary of the devastating terrorist attack against our country on Sept. 11, 2001. Though 10 years have passed, the pain of that attack is still...

  • What they’re saying: Area residents recount 9/11 memories

The 9/11 tragedy was a pivotal moment not only for this country, but around the world. It’s difficult to find anyone who doesn’t remember where they were and what they were doing. Recently, some were kind enough to share those memories in a series of video-taped interviews with Freedom New Mexico. A new mother. A fire chief. A library director. A teenager at home in her native Pakistan. All recalled the sadness and confusion of that day. But their reactions about what it all now means to them a decade later were as var...

  • Anniversary is call for sober reflection

For many of us, we clearly remember the morning of Sept. 11, 2001 — the surreal news reports, the images of iconic buildings collapsing, the uncertainty of the extent of these terrorist attacks. Now, almost unbelievably, it is 10 years later, and likewise amazingly and miraculously, our nation has not sustained another comparable hit like 9/11. Not to take away the severity of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq resulting from 9/11 and smaller terrorist attempts or events such as the Fort Hood shootings, but many will...

  • Worry, fear gripped local residents on day of attacks

    Sharna Johnson

Clovis shared in the fear and tension that gripped the nation on Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorist attacks created a sense of vulnerability that struck close to home for the community, in more ways than one. The tone was one of worry and fear as people around the U.S. watched in horror and shock 10 years ago as the Twin Towers in New York City collapsed. Then-City Manager Ray Mondragon, who a couple months later would tour the devastation, still remembers the fateful morning of...
