  • Current administration dangerous

It bothers me to no end that millions of Americans simply don’t get just how dangerous this current administration’s views are, especially about the nature of our basic rights. I suppose I should not be surprised, given the utterly perverted primary and secondary education most people receive now in their government-run schools. After all, those very schools and everyone with a job in the system depend upon the flat-out rejection of the idea of our basic, natural rights spelled out in the Declaration of Independence. For if...

  • Fuel grading system fails auto consumers

Given the difficulties facing the auto industry, one would think the U.S. government would ease off the accelerator on absurd new regulations until cars started rolling more quickly off dealer lots. The government itself still owns much of General Motors and Chrysler. Instead, the federal Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation are considering new vehicle mileage ratings. Reported aftermarketNews.com: “One proposal would replace the familiar numeric miles-per-gallon system required on all new cars a...

An estimated 2,000 came out to see the headline act perform, “We Built This City (on Rock n’ Roll)” and other hits. The group was preceded by a mix of local and touri...

  • My turn: Drug abuse serious issue

I’m not one for making something into a big deal if it’s not warranted. But this week’s video is just a small example of why the article in Thursday’s paper should be taken very seriously, and local pharmacies and law enforcement alike should prepare themselves. Prescription drug abuse may not be an issue yet in Portales. But if it ever does become an issue, I hope it doesn’t slap us all in the face like it did in Farmington. A former public service officer held up a pharmacy at gunpoint, took a hostage then led police on... Full story

    Kevin Wilson

A short Clovis City Commission meeting had its share of history, spiritual events and music to go with a Hull Street Bridge update. City Commissioner Bobby Sandoval told commissioners and audience members Thursday that cement pouring, which started Tuesday night, is finished on the overpass, which was closed in June 2008 for safety concerns. He added he was invited to a walk on the rebar portion of the bridge, and showed a series of photos from the visit. City engineer Justin Howalt said the project is on schedule for a Nov....

  • Still blessed with memories of Granny Lowe

Her name was Anne Haseltine Langley Lowe. She was my great-grandmother. She had 11 children, the second born, Lillie Anne Lowe Farrar, being my grandmother. Her daughter, Gladys Rosalyn Farrar Foster was my mother. My Granny Lowe never missed a service in that little Baptist church in Clarendon, Texas. Her sweet spirit and love for others endured until her late eighties. She went to be with the Lord when I was in my twenties, but her memories still affect me today. I am so glad that my great-grandmother loved the Lord. She...

  • Elbow grease better than WD-40

Glenda Price I volunteered to go pick up this two-horse trailer and bring it home. It was only about 25 miles away, so I figured it was no problem, and took off on my merry errand. A really nifty gal named Rita had been storing it at her place. It had been a couple of years, so I wondered if I needed to get tires for it. Like I said, she is a nifty person. She had parked it so the wheels sat on wooden boards, which kept the tires off the ground. They were fine — except for one that looked a bit low. I had my 2-inch...
