  • Officials discuss marijuana response

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 7, 2019

CLOVIS — Recreational marijuana will be a reality in New Mexico, Clovis Mayor David Lansford said. The only variable for Clovis is how the city chooses to deal with it. Lansford addressed the Clovis City Commission at the conclusion of its Thursday meeting with news that Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has placed recreational marijuana legalization on the agenda for the 2020 legislative session. The 30-day session can only deal with budgetary issues unless the governor’s office makes a special exception. With Democrats hol...

  • Rams sweep Clovis for first victory

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Sep 7, 2019

CLOVIS — A Portales/Clovis rivalry clash is always fun, something to look forward to for players, coaches and fans. It’s even more fun still for the team that wins those clashes. And in the case of Tuesday night’s volleyball match at Rock Staubus Gymnasium, Portales was the team having the most fun. Though each set was hotly contested early, the Rams were able to take control in each of them and rolled to a 3-0 sweep of Clovis — 25-13, 25-18, 25-10 — for their first victory of...

  • Clovis tops Portales, moves to 6-1 on girls soccer season

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Sep 7, 2019

PORTALES — Both the Clovis and Portales girls soccer teams had their challenges when they played Thursday at Portales High School. Clovis’ may not have seemed so glaring, because a 5-1 record coming in can salve a lot of shortcomings. Portales’ 0-3 made its struggles that much more noticeable. The Lady Wildcats were missing their top three scorers from last season — strikers Madison Lynch and Neveah Coronado with their 14 goals combined, and midfielder Danielle Griego. Yet the ’Cats were still able to piece together...

Over in Ada, Oklahoma, the women’s team took a 1-0 win to take their first season opener since the 2006 season. Junior midfielder Lucas Vaz led the way for the men’s team, with a hand in both Greyhound goals. In the 11th minut...

  • Rams top Dons, move to 3-0

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Sep 7, 2019

PORTALES — If you blinked, sneezed or visited the rest room at Greyhound Stadium Friday night, you may have missed something big happen during one of the Portales football team’s scoring drives. When the Rams had the ball against West Las Vegas, they usually found the end zone quickly, and they certainly found it often. The result was a 46-7 rout for the Rams in their home opener, on the strength of 33 first-half points, 20 in the first quarter alone. Portales’ first two s...

  • Clovis boys take draw with NMMI

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 7, 2019

ROSWELL — If the saying is true, that a tie is like kissing your sister, the Clovis boys soccer team broke out the Chapstick and gave sis a smackeroo Thursday night at New Mexico Military Institute. The Wildcats traveled to Roswell Thursday and traveled back with a 1-1 tie in the books. That stalemate was not quite what the ’Cats wanted, but it did mark their fourth straight game without a loss, and moved their record to 4-2-1. “I thought that we didn’t play to our strengths in the midfield, which is maintaining a lot of poss...

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 7, 2019

LUBBOCK — For the second consecutive week, Clovis’ cross country program braved the heat to compete. This time, with an hour and a half road trip to boot. It was worth the heat and trekking to the Lubbock Invite, as Clovis’ varsity and junior varsity boys won team championships, the varsity with 56 points, the jayvee with 42. “I was really pleased overall with the effort,” Clovis head coach Mark Bussen said. “We ran the middle school (races) first, and so our (older) kids had to stand around, and it was pretty warm. You’r...

  • Greyhound volleyball splits first two matches in San Marcos

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 7, 2019

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Two matches and eight games in on the west coast, and Eastern New Mexico started its season with a split right down the middle. The Greyhounds won their opener Friday morning at the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Classic against Saint Martin’s, but the afternoon wasn’t as kind as Azusa Pacific took a four-set victory over the green and silver. The Greyhounds had two more games scheduled for Saturday, in the early afternoon against Bentley and later that evening against tournament host Cal State San Marco...

  • ENMU exits NCAA probation

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 7, 2019

PORTALES — While university officials insist much went on at the administrative levels, an average fan of Eastern New Mexico University didn’t see much impact while the college spent four years in NCAA probation. And now it’s over. The university received word last week that it has satisfactorily completed the probation period that started Sept. 1, 2015. "We are extremely pleased to hear about the NCAA's recent decision," Interim Athletic Director Jeff Long said in a school release. "It has been a total team effort as we ha...

  • Rio Rancho tops Clovis

RIO RANCHO — Sophomore running back Zach Vigil carried the ball 28 times for 167 yards, scoring four times on runs of 4, 1, 5 and 1 yard, as No. 7 Rio Rancho beat visiting No. 6 Clovis for the ninth year in a row, 48-28. The Wildcats (2-1) surprisingly never got into the Rams’ red zone, but made up for it with four touchdowns covering 60 or more yards. The Rams (1-2), going 7 for 7 in the red zone, also had senior quarterback Isaiah Chavez surpass the century mark on the ground — until he took a 15-yard loss while runni...

  • In tribute: Edmonston was highway technician, 'whittler'

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 7, 2019

CLOVIS — Apart from a few years with the Marines, Ernest Edmonston didn’t stray far from his birthplace of Curry County. In 76 years he served southeast New Mexico as a highway technician, a shooting guide and an accomplished “whittler.” Edmonston passed Aug. 23 and ceremonies were private. Born Nov. 12, 1942 in Clovis, Edmonston attended school in the city but “spent a lot of his childhood on an old dryland far near St. Vrain,” where he “learned the work ethic that he carried all his life,” according to the obituary his fa...

    David Grieder - Staff|Updated Sep 7, 2019

SANTA FE — In upholding the murder conviction of a Clovis man, the state’s Supreme Court has abolished the “spousal communication privilege” for subsequent cases. The ruling came in regard to an appeal for David Gutierrez II’s first-degree murder conviction for the shooting death of Jose Valverde, who was found dead April 8, 2002, inside a boxcar in Clovis. The case went cold for 13 years, but Gutierrez was indicted in 2013, tried by a jury in 2017 and sentenced to life imprisonment. During trial Gutierrez’s ex-wife off...

  • These days, air conditioning hard to live without

    Karl Terry|Updated Sep 7, 2019

I’ve become soft in my old age. I get reminded of how soft I am every August. Each August I spend a good deal of time at the fairgrounds inside the only buildings I’m inside during the summer with evaporative cooling. I grew up under a swamp cooler and didn’t know anything else. If the cooler was working right and the air wasn’t too humid it felt great. Sure, when you woke up in the morning it was just a bit damp in the house. But by 10 a.m. the temperature outside had turned...

  • Our people: Passionate about reaching out

    Updated Sep 7, 2019

My name is Jason Swann. I'm a husband to my wife Ginny for 13 years. I'm a father of three boys who are seven, four, and two. I've been a pastor at Faith Christian Family Church for nearly 16 years. I'm passionate about reaching people for Christ, capturing moments. If you had a super power, what would it be and why? If I had a superpower it would be the ability to pause, rewind, and fast-forward time. That way I could go back, and relive the best moments, pause when I wanted...
