  • Plenty to keep locals busy this weekend

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 7, 2018

A frequent complaint of eastern New Mexico residents is that there’s nothing to do on the High Plains. That won’t be the case this weekend as there are events taking place in Clovis, Melrose and Portales. Those venturing into Hillcrest Park today will get a two-for-one as both the fourth annual Rotary Arts in the Park event (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the Desert Cruzers 22nd annual car show (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) are set to take place there. Clovis Civic Center General Manager Misty Bertrand said Arts in the Park will feature at lea... Full story

    Peter Stein|Updated Sep 7, 2018

CLOVIS — Friday night’s Rio Rancho-Clovis football game at Clovis High School had mistakes aplenty. But it was the Rams taking advantage of Wildcat mistakes at critical times. The result was a 20-13 Rio Rancho victory, the Rams’ first of the year, sealed by Braxton Padilla’s interception with roughly a minute to go in the fourth quarter. A work of art it wasn’t, but Rio Rancho got it done and improved to a 1-2 record. “Any win, especially in Clovis, is a great win. So we...

  • Home opener no easy task for Hounds

    Eric Murray|Updated Sep 7, 2018

PORTALES — “Do your job.” That famous Bill Belichick quote is something that Eastern New Mexico football is living by this week, as the Greyhounds try to bounce back from last week. The Hounds opened the season at Missouri S&T last Thursday, where they surrendered 512 total yards of offense in a 31-14 defeat. Tonight, however, won’t be much easier for ENMU (0-1), despite it being the team’s home opener. Eastern faces No. 25 Colorado Mesa (1-0), another team with plenty of... Full story

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 7, 2018

ROSWELL — Down three starters, and having to suit up several junior varsity players, Portales soccer was in for a long day on Friday. The Rams dropped a tough one to Carlsbad, 5-0, to open up the Roswell Coyote Classic Tournament. “To be honest, we stepped our game up more,” Rams coach Juan Mendez said. “We worked the ball around better, but we gave up too many goals.” Due to injuries, Mendez’ Rams (0-3) were without three starters, forcing a number of young JV players to...
