    Matthew Asher

STAFF WRITER [email protected] Much like last year, the Portales Rams dominated their first two opponents and are sitting at 2-0. Next up for Portales is the three-hour drive to Las Vegas to face the West Las Vegas Dons, a team that closely resembles the Rams in more ways than just an identical 2-0 record. Staff photo: Matthew Asher Senior running back Darion Ontiveros runs back a kickoff during practice. In two games Ontiveros has scored six total touchdowns. “Honestly, t...

  • Wildcats welcome undefeated Rio Rancho

    Kevin Wilson

Sports Editor [email protected] Whichever high school football power rankings are looked at, one thing is clear: Two of the state’s best will go head to head as Clovis hosts Rio Rancho Friday night. The Wildcats (2-0) are coming off wins against Hobbs (46-10) and Carlsbad (34-14) while the Rams are coming off drummings of Mayfield (34-7) and Americas (31-7). Friday’s matchup should be an explosive one no matter the outcome. Both teams feature a power-run offense. The Wil...

  • Wolverines seek first win against Foxes

    Dave Wagner

SPORTS WRITER [email protected] The Texico Wolverines haven’t exactly gotten off to the kind of start they would have liked this season. Meantime, Fort Sumner has come out of the gates strong. The two old-time rivals get together for the fourth time in the last five years on Friday at Texico in a 7 p.m. start. The Class 2A Foxes (2-0) have already whipped Class 4A New Mexico Military (34-20) and Class 3A Santa Rosa (31-6) while the 3A Wolverines (0-2) have managed only six points so far in road losses to 4A Portales a...

  • Rodriguez: Saints live up to their names

    Helena Rodriguez

I was sitting on the couch with Mom when the late night breaking news of Princess Diana’s death broke in 1997. This past weekend, Mom and I watched round-the-clock coverage of another iconic death, that of Juan Gabriel. And we also watched the canonization of the iconic Mother Teresa. Mom and I have shared many of these tragic moments in television history, and also, with the latter, some blessed moments. Mother Teresa is now officially a saint. And the late Mexican Elvis P... Full story

  • Brandon: Let God be the strength of your heart

    Judy Brandon

With my son John Scott’s heart issues, I have been thinking about “hearts” much of the time these last few weeks. The Bible has hundreds of scriptures in regard to “hearts.” But I like especially Psalm 73:26: “ My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” That tells me that even though a heart may be weak, the Maker, God, gives it spiritual strength from day to day to go on. So the question is: Is God the strength of your heart... Full story

  • Brown: Farmers measure every drop of rain

Hallelujah, it’s raining water. You might notice a slight uptick in the mouth-corners of your favorite farmer or rancher. There is only one thing pretty much guaranteed to have that effect and it’s moisture falling from the sky. But don’t fear, while they may be moving a little faster and more likely to tell a joke than a horror story, they will still want to talk about the weather. Rain or shine, wind or snow, dry or drowning, we always want to discuss it. Not in vague terms... Full story
